Wheeling

 Police Dept. taking applications for Citizen’s Police Academy

The Wheeling Police Department is now accepting applications for its next Citizen’s Police Academy, scheduled to run from September through mid-November. Classes will meet one night a week from 7-9:30 p.m. at the police department, 1 Community Boulevard. The academy is designed to increase understanding between citizens and the police through education, and will acquaint participants with law enforcement’s role in the criminal justice system and with the tasks police officers face in their daily work. The initial sessions will include an orientation and presentation on the history and organization of the Wheeling Police Department. Subsequent classes will include information on specific department units, including Patrol, Traffic, Crime Prevention/Community Relations, Forensic Evidence and Investigations. Law enforcement topics to be covered include domestic violence, child abuse, use of force, criminal law, major crimes and community policing. The academy also includes a demonstration by Duke, the department’s police canine. Upon completion of the 10-week curriculum, new academy members will have an opportunity to ride in a patrol car for one shift, and graduates also will have the option of joining the Wheeling Police Department’s Citizen’s Patrol. Village offers pair of Electronics Waste Drop-Off events

The village announced that it will hold an Electronics Waste Drop-Off event (for residents only) from 8 a.m. to noon July 23 and July 30 at Libertyville Public Works, 600 North Ave. Accepted items include cable receivers, cameras, CD players, computers (including tablets), computer drives, cords and cables, digital converter boxes, DVD players/recorders, electronic keyboards and mice, fax machines, holiday lights, mainframes, modems, monitors, PDA organizers, portable digital music players, printers, satellite receivers, scanners, shredders, small-scale servers, stereos, telephones, VCRs and video consoles.  Long Grove

 Village honors Turner with Citizen of Distinction award

The village announced that longtime resident Barbara Turner was honored as a Citizen of Distinction during its Village Board meeting on June 28. Turner, who celebrated her 97th birthday on June 13, was recognized as a cherished resident, friend, leader and role model in the community. In addition to serving as the librarian at Kildeer Countryside School, Turner was one of the founders of the Long Grove Historical Society, and she also co-authored, “Long Grove Lore and Legend,” a book about the history of Long Grove. Turner also was presented with the 2010 Conservation and Native Landscaping Award, by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Chicago Wilderness, and she received the 2011 inaugural Lake County Conservation Award, presented by Liberty Prairie Conservancy. She also is part of the Reed-Turner Family, which set aside (in perpetuity) 36 acres of biologically diverse land to the public in the 1980s as an Illinois Nature Preserve.

Cruisin’ With Cops event to feature car show, grilled eats

The Lincolnshire Police Department, in cooperation with The Fresh Market, will host Cruisin’ With Cops, its third annual National Night Out kickoff event, from 6-9 p.m. July 29 in the parking lot at The Fresh Market, 475 Milwaukee Ave. The event will include a display of race cars, classic cars, exotic cars and other types, and The Fresh Market will offer grilled summertime favorites for a nominal fee.  Chamber to host Business After Hours networking event

The Wauconda Area Chamber of Commerce will host Business After Hours, a networking event for Chamber members and their guests, from 5-7 p.m. July 27 at John’s Complete Auto Service, 221 S. Antioch

Police Dept., Dairy Queen team up to reward bike safety

The Antioch Police Department, in partnership with the Antioch Dairy Queen, announced the formation of a new program aimed at encouraging and rewarding safe bicycle practices by children in the community. Dairy Queen, 966 Main Street, has provided the police department with coupons that police officers will have on hand for distribution to children who are seen wearing safety helmets when operating their bikes. Children receiving coupons can then redeem them at Dairy Queen for a free ice cream cone. According to the Center for Disease Control and Protection, approximately 515,000 people nationwide annually sustain injuries on bicycles that require emergency treatment. Adolescents and children represent roughly half of the total number, with nearly 26,000 of those injuries resulting in traumatic brain injuries. Fox River Grove

Village announces increase in water and sewer rates

A report stated the Village Board recently passed a 3 percent water and sewer rate increase. The base charge is now $27.31 for water only and $51.86 for water and sewer. The increase covers a portion of the cost to operate the water and sewer systems for the village. The user charge for all customers located within the corporate limits for each 1,000 gallons is $3.03 for water only and $7.40 for water and sewer. The village stated that regular increases are necessary in order to keep pace with the increase in operating expenses and facility modernization.
