Job Center offers Summer Youth Employment Program

The Job Center of Lake County is now accepting applications for the 2018 Lake County Summer Youth Employment Program. Participants (approximately 215 area youth) in the program will work at various sites throughout Lake County, including a mix of private employers and non-profit organizations, local municipalities and community-based organizations. Workers will be paid $8.25 per hour and work approximately 25 hours weekly in various areas, including office support, camp counseling programs, and cleaning and maintenance. The program will begin June 8 and last approximately six weeks. To qualify, applicants must be age 14 to 18 (by April 15) or 14 to 22 with an IEP (Individualized Education Plan); must be attending middle or high school; and must be receiving free or reduced lunch or meeting low-income guidelines. Applications are available online at www.lakecountyil.gov or in person at the Job Center of Lake County, 1 N. Genesee St., Waukegan — and also at various county township offices and schools. Applications must be submitted by Feb. 28, either in person at the Job Center, by mail (1 N. Genesee St., Waukegan, Ill. 60085) or by fax ((847) 377-3474). Fox Lake

Fox Lake Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics

The 2018 Fox Lake Polar Plunge will be held from 1-3 p.m. Feb. 25 at Lakefront Park, 71 Nippersink Blvd. The event, presented by the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Illinois, offers participants an opportunity to support Special Olympics by taking a leap into the frigid waters of Fox Lake. Participants must raise at least $100 in donations from friends, family members and co-workers in order take a plunge. Plungers will receive incentive prizes based on the amount of money they raise. Participants who raise the minimum of $100 will receive an official Polar Plunge hooded sweatshirt. Other prizes will be awarded at the $250, $500 and $1,000 levels. The deadline for registration is 11:45 p.m. Feb. 24. Check-in will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the day of the event. To register online, visit www. soill.org/polar-plunge. Barrington

Slew of teachers earn National Board Certification

The Barrington 220 Community Unit School District Board of Education recently recognized nine teachers who have earned National Board Certification. The credential is considered to be one of the most respected nationwide among educators. Teachers earn the certification through a rigorous process and must renew every 10 years. The following Barrington 220 teachers earned their National Board Certification in December 2017: Stephanie Blatchley (Countryside Elementary School); Pam Katchen and Jennifer Magdalener (Hough Street School); and Lauren Schoepp and Cary Waxler (Barrington High School). The following teachers renewed their certification in November 2017: Amy Breidenbach (Grove Avenue Elementary); Sara Carlson (Roslyn Road Elementary); and Becky Wiegel (Director of Language Programs & Grants). Chamber to host Business & Community Expo

The Wauconda Area Chamber of Commerce will host its Business & Community Expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 24 at Wauconda High School, 555 N. Main St. The event features more than 50 business vendors and exhibitors, a career fair, health and wellness fair, craft show, passport registration, raffles and giveaways, photo booth and a Heartland Blood Centers blood drive (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.). Live entertainment includes the Wauconda High School Jazz band (11 a.m.), a Wauconda Police Department K-9 demonstration (noon), the Traveling World of Reptiles (1 p.m.), the Wauconda High School Show Choir (2:15 p.m.) and Gangi Martial Arts (3 p.m.). Highland Park

Jogmen to serve as new Highland Park Police Chief

The city announced that Louis E. Jogmen will serve as the new Highland Park Police Chief, effective Feb. 23. Jogmen has served in law enforcement for 24 years, most recently as Deputy Chief of Police for the Park Ridge Police Department. He also served as a public safety assessor for Stephen A. Laser and Associates and Personnel Strategies, and is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, North Suburban Chiefs Association and Northeastern Illinois Public Safety Information Officer Association. Jogmen holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and a master’s degree from Roosevelt University, and is a graduate of Northwestern University’s Executive Management and Police Staff and Command Program. Mundelein

Park District Board leader Dolan nets service award

The Mundelein Park & Recreation District announced that Mundelein Park District Board President and Commissioner Kevin Dolan was recognized with the Mike Cassidy Commissioner Community Service Award by the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD) during the organization’s annual All-Conference Luncheon on Jan. 19. During his 20-year tenure with the Mundelein Park District Board, Dolan has held the offices of treasurer, vice president and president of the Board of Commissioners. Dolan’s accomplishments include his role in the construction of the Diamond Lake Sports Complex, and involvement in the expansion of the Park District’s natural resource management practices to include in-house prescribed burns, three steambank stabilization projects, installation of rain gardens and two pond stabilization projects.
