Staff of elected officials to host open meetings

The village announced that staff from the offices of State Senator Julie Morrison (D-29th) and Congressman Brad Schneider (D-10th) will be on hand to meet and discuss issues with community members from 9-11 a.m. Feb. 27 and March 27 at Indian Trails Public Library, 355 Schoenbeck Road. Staff from Morrison’s office will meet privately with attendees to answer questions about senior services, consumer protection and fraud, property taxes, veterans’ services, and other state services and benefits. Staff from Schneider’s office will discuss USCIS, Medicare, Social Security, Veterans Affairs, the IRS and any other federal agency. No appointment is necessary for these open meetings. Mundelein High’s FBLA students pile up awards

Mundelein High School’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) group earned a number of awards while competing in the Illinois FBLA Northern Area Conference, held Jan. 28 at Wauconda High School. A total of 53 group members competed as either individuals or as part of a team to qualify for state competition, to be held April 6 and 7 in Springfield. Mundelein’s first-place winners were: Tyler Collins (Business Calculations); MacKenzie Stewart (Business Law); and Jillian Hoffstadt (Sales Presentation). Second-place winners were: Sahil Patel and Thomas Riggio (Global Business); Justin Park (Introduction to Business); Sydnie Matthews (Journalism); and Liam Guiritan (Networking Concepts). Third place: Natasha Kumar (Business Communications); Michal Gryga (Cyber Security); Derek Lee (Introduction to FBLA); and Christine Espinosa, Kavana Belagur and Taneesha Tavkar (Website Design). Fourth place: Ryann Ray (Business Calculations); Xavier Greene (Introduction to Parliamentary Procedure); Josephine Hutson (Journalism); and Hunter Magee (Personal Finance). Fifth place: Kendall Job (Business Communications); Matthew Dawlowski (Cyber Security); Nathan Clapp (Introduction to Financial Math); and Kate Fladhammer (Public Speaking). Sixth place: Allan Rodriguez, Kaihen Hoferitza and Sofia Fejoo (Broadcast Journalism); Colin Geary (Economics); Yasmeen Fatallah Rivera and Christine So (Emergency Business Issues); and Sydeny Szalinski (Journalism). Eighth place: Gertrude Palillo (Health Care Administration); Justin So (Public Speaking); and Parker Geary (Accounting). Park Dist. to host Frosty Footrace 5K fundraiser

The Round Lake Area Park District will host the 2018 Frosty Footrace 5K Run/Walk at 11 a.m. Feb. 25, beginning and ending at the Sports Center, 2004 Municipal Way, Round Lake Beach. The cost is $25 (pre-registration) and $30 (day of event) for adults, and $12 (pre-registration) and $15 (day of event) for ages 13 and under. All proceeds will benefit the Round Lake Area Park District FUNds for Recreation Scholarship Program. Registration forms are available at the Sports Center and the Robert W. Rolek Community Center, 814 Hart Road, Round Lake, and online at www.rlapd.org. Race numbers will only be available for pick up the day of the race. Creative Writing Contest underway at library

The village announced that The Friends of the Warren-Newport Public Library is hosting its 25th annual Creative Writing Contest. The contest has two categories — Short Story (fiction) and Poetry — for story submissions, and is limited to two entries in each category in the following groups: Grades 3-5; Grades 6-8; High School; and Adult. A total of 24 prizes will be awarded to winners in all age groups (per category) as follows: $50 (first place), $30 (second place) and $20 (third place). An awards ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. April 8 in the meeting room at the Warren-Newport Public Library, 224 O’Plaine Road. The deadline to enter is March 11. Las Vegas Night Fundraiser to boost BGHS sports

Buffalo Grove High School will host a Las Vegas Night Fundraiser from 7-11 p.m. March 3 at Ditka’s Restaurant, 200 W. Euclid Ave., Arlington Heights. The event includes gaming, appetizers and a cash bar, as well as a silent auction, raffle prizes, door busters and split the pot. Tickets are $50 in advance and $60 at the door. Catlow Theater to host ‘Oscar Shorts’ film fest

The Catlow Theater, 116 W. Main St., and the Barrington Cultural Commission will present, “Oscar Shorts,” a film festival featuring the 2018 Academy Award-nominated short films and live action films, from noon to 4 p.m. March 3 and 4 (Feb. 24 is sold out). This year’s nominated short films are “Garden Party,” “Lou,” “Negative Space” and “Revolting Rhymes.” The nominated live action films are “DeKalb Elementary,” “My Nephew Emmett,” “The Eleven O’Clock,” “The Silent Wind” and “Watu Wote (All of Us).” Trailers for each of the films can be viewed at www.oscars.org. Some of the films are not officially rated and may contain content not appropriate for young children. Tickets for the film fest are $15 each, and are limited.
