Deerfield

Village Board considers ban on assault weapons

The village reported that the Deerfield Village Board recently presented a report concerning the implementation of a ban on assault weapons, as previously undertaken by officials in Highland Park. Following a legal challenge, the Highland Park ordinance was upheld by federal courts. Deerfield adopted an ordinance in July 2013, providing definitions of assault weapons and large-capacity magazines, and requiring the safe storage and safe transportation of assault weapons in the village. In the opinion of the village attorney, the adoption of the ordinance met the time window requirement included in the State of Illinois’ Firearm Concealed Carry Act. As a result, the village preserved the right to amend the ordinance in the future. The proposed amendment to the ordinance — based on the Highland Park ordinance — would ban the possession, sale and manufacture of assault weapons and large-capacity magazines in Deerfield, and provides for an effective date 60 days after the ordinance goes into effect. Buffalo Grove

Village earns high marks for long-term bond rating

The village reported that Moody’s Investor Services recently confirmed Buffalo Grove’s AAA long-term bond rating, citing the community’s “favorable location and its affluent demographic profile,” in addition to strong management and a low debt burden. Moody’s stated that the village closed each of the last five fiscal years with positive operations, increasing the operating fund balance to $24.9 million. Other factors given were budgetary flexibility and strong liquidity with available cash balances compared to total government fund expenditures, in addition to the low debt burden. Financial management was rated “strong,” as well as the village’s financial policies and the use of long-range planning documents. Buffalo Grove is one of only a handful of communities in Illinois to hold the highest bond rating available from Moody’s, representing less than 1 percent of the 1,299 municipalities statewide. Island Lake

Village water system meets state health standards

The village announced that the Island Lake community water system has been recognized by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) for maintaining perfect compliance in 2017 for 12 consecutive months in accordance with the Illinois Public Water Supply Regulation Act. The IDPH stated that water operators who maintain the correct level of fluoride in drinking water contribute more toward positive oral health measures by communities than the combined efforts of all oral health professionals. Maximum oral health benefits are provided to the public when the levels of fluoride are maintained within the optimal range. Island Lake was cited for “the expertise and diligence of (its) water department” in meeting the IDPH standards. For more information, call 847-526-8764 or visit www.villageofislandlake.com.

Lake Bluff

Village proposes plan for joint fire/paramedic services

The village announced that it has approached the adjacent Rockland Fire Protection District with a formal plan to provide joint fire and paramedic services throughout Lake Bluff and the unincorporated community of Knollwood. The plan proposes a three-year path to a full-service Knollwood-Lake Bluff fire department that is expected to save taxpayers at least $500,000 over five years. At the same time, the plan adds a full-time presence featuring firefighters and paramedics. The joint plan differs from previous proposals presented by the City of Lake Forest and the Village of Libertyville in which firefighters from other communities would be responsible for protecting the residents of the Rockland Fire Protection District.
