Inclusiveness focus of Crime Victims’ Rights Week event

Lake County State’s Attorney Michael G. Nerheim will host Creating a More Inclusive Lake County, a free event for county residents, from 1:30-4:30 p.m. April 10 at the Holiday Inn Gurnee Convention Center, 6161 W. Grand Ave., Gurnee. The event is being held in recognition of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (April 8-14). The 2018 national theme, “Expand The Circle: Reach All Victims,” is intended to create awareness and celebrate the courage of all victims of crime. The event includes a screening of the 2016 Oscar-winning short film, “Sing (Mindenki),” followed by a facilitated discussion and break-out sessions. The film’s message of inclusion, and fighting oppression and injustice, will guide the afternoon’s dialogue. There will be a focus on historically excluded groups, including individuals with disabilities and members of the LGBTQIA community. Village offers one-time yard waste pick-up service

The village announced that yard waste clean-up service will take place the week of April 9. Residents may set out an unlimited amount of yard waste for this one-time pick-up (at no extra cost) at the street after 6 p.m. the night before the regularly scheduled garbage pick-up date. Yard waste (up to 50 pounds) must be placed in brown paper yard waste bags or plastic garbage containers (up to 32-gallon) and clearly marked, “yard waste.” In addition, all branches must be tied in bundles no more than 2 inches in diameter and 4 feet long. Barrington Hills

Meeting to weigh proposed zoning amendment

The village announced that the Barrington Hills Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) will continue its discussion of a proposed amendment to the zoning ordinance restricting the allowance of signs on open space properties, including deliberating the size and maximum number of signs posted on conservation properties, during its next meeting, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. April 16 at Village Hall, 112 Algonquin Road. Library to offer gifts during National Library Week

The Lake Forest Library, 360 E. Deerpath Road, announced that it will present a small gift (while supplies last) to everyone who checks out an item during National Library Week (April 8-14). This year’s theme is “Libraries Lead.” In 2017, the Lake Forest Library had 427,690 visitors, checked out nearly 314,000 items, ran 527 programs with nearly 19,400 attendees, had 664 patrons use the Media Lab, circulated more than 25,000 eBooks and answered just under 83,000 reference questions. Wheeling

Household battery recycling available at Village Hall

The village announced that it is sponsoring a battery recycling program in conjunction with the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC). A drop-off box is accessible from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at Village Hall, 2 Community Blvd. Rechargeable, NiCd, NiMh, lithium ion, lithium polymer and household alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9V) will be accepted. Rechargeable batteries must have tape on contact points or be contained in an individual self-locking plastic bag to avoid sparks. In addition, alkaline batteries must be separated from rechargeable batteries before dropping off. Automotive batteries will not be accepted. Fox Lake 

Cinderella’s Ball for dads and daughters set for April 14

The village announced that the Fox Lake Cinderella’s Ball: Daddy-Daughter Dance will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. April 14 at Lakefront Park, 71 Nippersink Blvd. The event includes dancing, music, games, activities and an ice cream sundae bar. The cost is $12 per dad-and-daughter couple (residents), $15 per couple (non-residents) and $5 per additional daughter. Registration is required; the deadline is April 6. Lincolnshire

Village seeks donations for Cradles to Crayons drive 

The village announced that it is hosting a Cradles to Crayons collection drive throughout the month of April for Chicago area children in need. Cradles to Crayons is a local non-profit organization serving homeless and low-income children from birth through age 12. Anyone interested in participating in the collection drive can bring new and gently used children’s clothes, shoes, toys and books to the collection boxes located inside Village Hall, 1 Olde Half Day Road, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Island Lake

First Create and Caffeinate event to be held April 14

The village announced that Island Lake’s First Create and Caffeinate, an event for adults ages 50 and up, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon April 14 at the Village Hall Gym, 3720 Greenleaf Ave. Participants will create rustic signs on wood with acrylic paint to display in their homes or present as gifts. The event includes complimentary coffee, tea and sweets. The fee is $39, and all supplies are included. Reservations are being accepted in advance; walk-ins are welcome.
