Lake County

Stormwater team to review proposed Foxconn project

A county report stated that the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission (SMC) has entered into a contract with Christopher B. Burke Engineering, Ltd., to review the proposed Foxconn development and related adjacent improvements due to concerns of adverse impacts on flooding and water quality along the Des Plaines River in Lake County. Foxconn, a major supplier to Apple Inc. for its iPhones, is constructing a large manufacturing facility in Mount Pleasant, Wis. The State of Wisconsin passed legislation waiving environmental regulations for Foxconn and approved various incentives. The Foxconn site is in the headwaters of the Des Plaines River Watershed, which is immediately upstream of Lake County and encompasses a major source of surface water. In July 2017, intense rainfall in the area created record-breaking flood heights throughout the region. In order to address watershed-wide flood impacts, SMC said it is essential that proper flood mitigation methods for Foxconn and the surrounding area are planned, designed and enforced. The impact analysis consists of a multi-phased review to objectively identify the magnitude of stormwater, floodplain and wetland impacts, and mitigation methods proposed. Once the review has been completed, results will be reported and recommendations made. For more information, call 847-377-7700 or visit www.lakecountyil.gov.

Grayslake

Area to experience multiple railroad crossing closures

The village announced that the Grayslake area will be experiencing multiple railroad crossing closures in the coming weeks, as both Metra and Canadian National Railway have scheduled construction for railroad crossings under their jurisdiction. The Metra railroad crossing at Route 120, in Hainesville, is scheduled to be closed for construction Aug. 22-31. Additionally, the Canadian National crossing at Lake Street, in Grayslake, is scheduled to be closed from Aug. 27 to Sept. 2, and the Canadian National crossing at Center Street, in Grayslake, is scheduled to be closed Sept. 4-11. Each of the projects are weather-permitting, and detour signs will be provided for vehicles during the construction period. All of the scheduled dates are subject to change per the decision of Metra or Canadian National. For more information, call 847-223-8515 or visit www.villageofgrayslake.com.

Barrington Hills

Water testing event on tap for homes with private wells

The village announced that the Barrington Area Council of Governments (BACOG) will host a Level 1 Private Well Water Testing event from 1-7 p.m. Sept. 5 in the Performing Arts Center at The Garlands of Barrington, 1000 Garlands Lane, Barrington. Though the state requires public water supplies to be tested for a wide range of contaminants on a routine basis, there are no requirements for private wells to be tested. Therefore, households with private wells are advised to test for bacteria and nitrates on an annual basis to detect these invisible, odorless contaminants. Residents of Barrington Hills, Barrington, Deer Park, Lake Barrington, North Barrington, South Barrington and Tower Lakes, and the unincorporated areas of Barrington and Cuba townships are eligible. Eligible residents can drop off water samples at any time during the event. Presentations on groundwater protection, water softness, contributing chloride and water conditioning equipment will begin at 2 p.m. A mandatory $12 test kit must be purchased between Aug. 27 and Aug. 31. Kits for Barrington Hills residents are available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on those dates at Village Hall, 112 Algonquin Road. Because water samples must be tested by the laboratory within 24 hours of collection, residents must collect each sample directly prior to drop-off. Test results will be emailed to homeowners within two weeks. Any homeowner with positive results for bacteria or elevated nitrate levels will be contacted within 48 hours. For more information, call BACOG at 847-381-7871 or visit www.barringtonhills-il.gov.
