Health Dept. nets grants to expand services

The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center announced that it will receive four federal grants totaling $3.4 million to address the growing need for behavioral health services in the county. Funding will be used to expand the county’s Community Support Services, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) services and the “A Way Out” program. Grants for the benefit of homeless individuals, administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), will provide $2 million over five years. Through this funding, the Health Department and PADS Lake County will form a team to serve individuals with mental illness and co-occurring substance abuse disorders who are in vulnerable housing situations. SAMHSA’s Mental Health Awareness Training grant will provide $375,000 over three years to expand and improve the MHFA training initiative. The Expanding Access to Quality Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health Services grant, administered by the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA), will provide $514,000 over two years to expand the Health Department’s Medication-Assisted Treatment Services. The Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Site-based Program grant, administered by the U.S. Department of Justice, will provide $500,000 to expand Lake County’s “A Way Out” program, launched in 2016 by the Lake County Opioid Initiative to help individuals who are addicted to opioids or other drugs receive treatment. Public meeting to address Deerfield Road project

The village announced that the Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) will host a second public information meeting concerning improvements to Deerfield Road (from Milwaukee Avenue to Saunders/Riverwoods Road) from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 30 at Aptakisic Junior High School, 1231 Weiland Road. The purpose of the meeting is to present the preferred alternatives — Deerfield Road (from the Des Plaines River to Saunders/Riverwoods Road) or Deerfield Road (from Milwaukee Avenue to the Des Plaines River) — and to seek public comment on both. The meeting will be conducted in an open house format, and attendees may visit anytime during the meeting. Exhibits will be on display showing the proposed right-of-way and proposed property impacts. In addition, LCDOT representatives, along with project team members, will be available to answer questions concerning the project. Tighthead Brewing earns national gold medal

Mundelein’s Tighthead Brewing Company recently received a gold medal at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival competition. Presented by the Brewers Association, the GABF is the largest commercial beer competition in the world and recognizes the most outstanding beers produced in the United States. Tighthead Brewing was recognized in the Irish-Style Red Ale category for its Scarlet Red Fire Ale, one of the first beers brewed when the brewery opened in September 2011 at 161 N. Archer Ave. The 2018 GABF competition winners were selected among nearly 8,500 entries by an international panel of 293 expert judges, and were announced at the GABF awards ceremony, held in Denver, Colo. Police Dept. to host Drug Take Back Day

The village announced that Buffalo Grove Police Department and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) have partnered to host National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, the last official drug collection event of the year. Expired or unwanted prescription drugs can be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Buffalo Grove Police Department, 46 Raupp Blvd. The Police Department has a green mailbox stationed in the lobby for residents to conveniently and responsibly dispose of prescription drugs. As part of an ongoing service for safe prescription drug disposal, the green mailbox is permanently located in the Police Department lobby to provide year-round accessibility. Lakemoor

Village to offer Fall Brush Clean-Up program 

The village announced that its Fall Brush Clean-Up program will be offered Oct. 29. Lakemoor Public Works staff will collect small tree limbs and brush from every village street. Trucks will visit each street only once during the program, so residents are encouraged to place their brush for pick-up no later than 7 a.m. Oct. 29. Crews will not return once they have completed their route. All brush must be under 6 feet in length and 6 inches in diameter, and must be placed on the parkway for collection. Brush should be stacked into one large pile in the front/side parkway with cut ends facing the curb, and placed away from trees, mailboxes, utility poles/boxes, fire hydrants and parked vehicles. Grass clippings and other landscape waste will not be accepted. The accumulated brush will be ground into wood chips and placed in a pile at the Public Works Department, 333 Wegner Road, and will be available to residents free of charge. Fox Lake

Police Dept. to host Halloween Howl family event

The village announced that the Fox Lake Police Department, 301 S. Route 59, will host Halloween Howl from 4-7 p.m. Oct. 29. The event provides an opportunity for residents and families to meet members of the Fox Lake Police Department, and also includes children’s activities, bouncy houses, hay rides, treats, candy apples, hot dogs and hot chocolate.
