Project to chronicle immigration to DeKalb county

Northern Illinois University students are learning more about immigration to DeKalb County, with the goal of sharing what they learn with the public. They are collecting information that will be transformed into digital technology that will provide a new foundation of publicly available material for historical study, kindergarten through high school instruction and life-long learning.

DeKalb Goodwill tax program needs volunteers

Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois is seeking volunteers for its GoodTAXES program in the region.

The GoodTAXES Program offers free income tax preparation services for low-to-moderate income area residents from January to April each year. The program is entering its eighth year at Goodwill.

There are many different roles available at Goodwill’s tax sites, and no experience is necessary to become a volunteer. All training is provided free of charge. Volunteer opportunities include tax preparers, greeters, customer service assistants and interpreters. Volunteering hours are flexible and include days, nights and weekends. Work that improves local DeKalb environment to be awarded

The DeKalb Citizens’ Environmental Commission is accepting nominations for the 2016 PRIDE Awards (People Responsible for Improving DeKalb’s Environment Awards).

PRIDE Awards recognize local residents, organizations, and/or businesses that have significantly improved the quality of life in DeKalb through projects, activities or programs emphasizing resource conservation, energy efficiency, beautification, waste reduction or similar environmental improvements. Those conducting projects or programs aimed at increasing public awareness and knowledge of specific environmental issues are also eligible for consideration for a PRIDE Award.

The deadline for receipt of nominations is 3 p.m. Oct. 26. All nominations will be reviewed by the Citizens’ Environmental Commission, which will make the final selections.

This year marks the 24th anniversary of the awards. They are sponsored by the Citizens’ Environmental Commission, a diverse group of community volunteers whose main goal is to promote awareness and understanding of environmental issues in DeKalb and recommend practical means for environmental improvement.

Awards will be presented by the chairman of the commission at the DeKalb City Council meeting in December.

 

Enjoy DeKalb Spooktacular with candy and movie

Trick or treat and see a movie in downtown DeKalb, when the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, City of DeKalb, Egyptian Theatre and Nestle present Spooktacular, Oct. 27.

Children and their chaperones are invited to dress up in Halloween costumes and enjoy a safe, fun, trick-or-treating event at more than 30 downtown businesses from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Then, at 7 p.m. go to the Egyptian Theatre for a free showing of the movie, “The Addams Family.”

DeKalb Farm-to-table dinner to aid ag education program

A culinary event highlighting locally grown food prepared by a local chef will raise money a program fostering agriculture education.

Chef Rudy Galindo will prepare a four-course dinner with wine pairings using local ingredients from growers. The dinner will be held 4-7 p.m. at the Kishwaukee Country Club, 1901 Sycamore Road, DeKalb.

Tickets are $60 each for a four-course dinner paired with four wines using fresh local ingredients from local farmers and growers.

Galindo has extensive culinary experience having worked for the Lettuce Entertain You restaurants and as head chef at University Plaza at Northern Illinois University. He currently is the food service administrator at NIU.

All proceeds from the dinner will be donated to the Ag in the Classroom program of the DeKalb County Farm Bureau. The Ag in the Classroom program teaches students about food and farming and is the local source for food and farming-related materials, resources and programs for students and teachers in the county.

Free preschool screening offered in Genoa-Kingston District 424

Genoa-Kingston Community Unit School District 424 will hold a free developmental screening at Trinity Lutheran Church, 33930 N. State St., Genoa, from 8:15 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 25.

The screening gives a quick look at how a child is learning and growing. Different types of activities and questions will be used to learn how to best help the child. The areas that will be examined include motor, thinking, language, speech, vision and hearing.

If a child is between the ages of birth and 5 years and does not attend a local preschool or kindergarten, make an appointment by calling Genoa-Kingston Student Services at (815) 784-7022.

Kishwaukee College art faculty show their talents

The Kishwaukee College Art Gallery is hosting an exhibition of works by the college’s art faculty through Nov. 11.

The Faculty Art Show includes works by Kishwaukee College art instructors Joe Avalos, Daniel E. Connelly, Robert Davis, Cynthia de Seife, Jeremy Foy, Miles Halpern, Steven Hoover and Timothy King.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and is free and open to the public. The college is at 21193 Malta Road., Malta.
