Eureka College Announces Upcoming Theater Productions

EUREKA – The Eureka College theater department has announced its productions for the 2009-2010 academic year.
The department, in conjunction with the Eureka College Women’s Board, will offer a retelling of favorite childhood stories in “Fairy Tales: The Royal Players of Prince Desmond” at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 and 12 and 2 p.m. Sept. 13 in the Terrill Rooms in the Cerf College Center. The original production by Eureka College senior Jessica Whitington of Oakwood will present humorous adaptations of classic fairy tales as told to grumpy Prince Desmond by his royal players. Cost is $5 for children and $10 for adults and includes refreshments. Proceeds will support women’s board projects that benefit Eureka College.  
Figures from Eureka’s past will tell their stories in a free cemetery walk at 2 p.m. Sept. 20 in Olio Township Cemetery, 1015 S. Main St., Eureka. The event, which is co-sponsored by the Woodford County Historical Society, will feature Eureka College students portraying people of historical importance to the community.
“Clue: The Musical,” an interactive adaptation of the Parker Brothers’ board game, will be presented at 7 p.m. Oct. 6 through 10 and 2 p.m. Oct. 11 in Pritchard Theatre. Characters include the suspects from the board game and a detective who will help the audience solve the crime.  A possible 256 endings will mean a different outcome to each performance. Eureka College theater professor Holly Rocke will direct.
“Pygmalion,” the play that inspired the hit Broadway musical “My Fair Lady,” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17 through 21 in Pritchard Theatre. George Bernard Shaw’s classic tale of change and changers, tells how professor Henry Higgins takes on the challenge of “civilizing” streetwise Eliza Doolittle. Eureka College theater professor William Davis will direct.
Capping the season will be “The Birds” by Aristophanes at 7:30 p.m. February 23 through 27 and 2 p.m. Feb. 28 in Pritchard Theatre.  Written in 414 B.C. while Athens was at war, the play’s characters attempt to find peace and happiness by creating a magical kingdom of birds. Illinois State University theater professor Mark Baer will direct.
