Gowns of the Civil War Era Featured at Sewing Guild Jan. 21

EUREKA – “Civil War Ball Gown Construction” will be the topic of the January 21st meeting of the Woodford County Sewing Guild. Kay Saunders, a Civil War dance enthusiast, will bring several of her re-enactment gowns to the Woodford County Farm Bureau Building, 117 W. Center (across from Pizza Hut). Members and guests will get the opportunity to examine the dresses up close and see what went into the making of dresses in the 1860s. The meeting is from 7 to 9 P.M. and it is free and open to the public.

If the weather is bad and roads dangerous, the meeting will be postponed until later in the spring. If there is any doubt about the condition of the roads, call Karen at 467-4525 or 360-6772 before venturing out.

Kay attends many Civil War re-enactment events throughout the year, and she is a member of the Central Illinois Civil War Dance Society which performs dances in costume throughout Illinois. Woodford County residents have the opportunity to see the performances at the Metamora Historic Courthouse in Metamora several times a year. The Woodford County Sewing Guild’s goal is to promote interest in needlework of all kinds. Meeting on the third Thursday, September through May, the WCSG offers demonstration programs, show-and-tell among the participants, and often a free fabric exchange. Along with the formal meeting, there is conversation and much laughter. Everyone who uses thread (or yarn) and a needle (or hook) is welcome regardless of age.

For more information, please call Karen at 467-4525.
