Buffalo Grove

Village nets pair of safest city rankings

The village reported that Buffalo Grove was ranked as the 18th safest city in the United States, according to a recent report produced by Neighborhood Scout, a group that creates an annual rating list of the top 100 safest cities in the country. Ratings are determined from data provided by 18,000 law enforcement agencies throughout the U.S., and take into account the population of the community and the incidence of a variety of crimes per 1,000 residents. The types of crimes include burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, murder, rape, armed robbery and aggravated assault. Buffalo Grove was one of only three Illinois communities to rank among the top 20. In addition, the village recently was ranked as the second safest city in Illinois with a population of 30,000 or more by Value Penguin.

Village to remove diseased or dying parkway trees

The village announced that its Public Works Department currently is marking parkway trees that have been scheduled for removal with an orange “X.” Such trees have been identified as diseased or dying, and their removal is in the interest of public safety. Currently, the village does not have a program for the replacement of trees. Residents wishing to replace parkway trees at their own cost may do so after approval is granted from the Public Works Department. Prior to purchasing or planting a tree in the village right-of-way, a permit must be obtained identifying the species and location. There is no fee for the permit. Highland Park

City seeks feedback on noise ordinance hours

The city announced that it is seeking residents’ feedback on an amendment to Municipal Code, Chapter 95: Nuisances. The current regulation states that any noises disturbing or breaking the rest, sleep or quiet of individuals past 7 p.m. on any day of the week may be deemed a public nuisance. The city is considering a time frame of 10 p.m. on weekends (when the following day is Saturday, Sunday or a legal holiday), and a time frame of 8 p.m. on weeknights (when the following day is Monday through Friday). By comparison, neighboring communities generally have quiet hours after 10 p.m. on weekdays and after 11 p.m. on weekends. Noise and nuisance regulations exclude outdoor dining on any public right-of-way, construction occurring entirely inside a building or structure, commercial filming approved by the city, and activities approved as part of a special use and special event by the city. Highland Park’s current regulations are available at www.cityhpil.com/nuisances. To contact the City Manager’s Office with any feedback or recommendations regarding possible modifications or other considerations, call (847) 926-1000 or send an email to cityhp@cityhpil.com.
