Amateur radio operators focus of Field Day exercise 

The Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services (RACE) division of the McHenry County Emergency Management Agency is inviting the public to participate in Field Day — an annual 24-hour exercise sponsored by the American Radio Relay League, the national association for amateur radio operators — from 3-5 p.m. June 25 at stations located behind the maintenance facility at 12394 Ware Road, in Woodstock. Held outdoors, Field Day is an exercise that uses generator power to simulate conditions in which commercial power would be unavailable. In addition, the exercise simulates the same challenges operators would face in a real disaster scenario. During the event, amateur radio operators will demonstrate various radio techniques, from classic Morse code to modern digital and satellite communications methods.  American Legion’s Vet Fest to benefit area military veterans

In support of area military veterans, Huntley American Legion Post 673, 11712 Coral St., will host Vet Fest from 3-11 p.m. June 25. The event will feature various family activities, food and beverages, and live music performances by Serendipity (4-6 p.m.), FlashDrive (6:30-8:30 p.m.) and Rumor Hazit (9-11 p.m.). Donations will be accepted as admission. All proceeds will benefit Pits for Patriots, Gifts to the Yanks, New Horizons and the Occupation Warrior Scholarship Program, among others. Senior Center seeks volunteers to help with activity programming expansion

The city reported that the Harvard Senior Center, 6817 Harvard Hills Road, is seeking active older adults to serve as volunteers in conjunction with the expansion of its current activity programming. Volunteers are need to visit isolated seniors, drive seniors to doctors and other appointments, help with small home repair projects, and deliver meals to frail elderly. The Senior Center also seeks volunteers who can have a craft to share, have an ability to teach others a new game or skill, or can organize a cooking class or knitting group. Party planners and assistants, and Spanish-speaking individuals, also are needed. Other volunteer opportunities are available as well.  Deadline approaches for renewal of mandatory vehicle stickers

The city reported that the deadline for residents to purchase mandatory City of McHenry vehicle stickers is June 30. Stickers can be purchased in person at the Municipal Center, 333 S. Green St., with cash or by check, credit or debit card. Fees are $12 for passenger vehicles (private use) and pick-up trucks (8,000 pounds or less), $9 for motorcycles, $15 for school buses, $30 for trucks (8,001 pounds or more), $34.50 for public passenger vehicles (including taxis and limos) and $40.50 for public passenger vehicles (with a capacity of more than seven people). A late fee of $3 per month will be assessed for stickers purchased after the deadline. Replacement stickers are $2.25 each.  City Council approves grant awards to help fund tourism

The city reported that recommendations for the Fiscal Year 2016-17 Hotel/Motel Tax Tourism Grant Awards recently was approved by City Council. The city provides annual funding assistance to local nonprofit organizations to help produce a wide variety of tourism-generating events and activities. Funds are made available through a 5 percent tax on hotel and motel facilities as allowed by state statute. Automatic “Tier 1” awards were allocated to the Woodstock Opera House ($30,000), Visit McHenry County Convention and Visitors Bureau ($15,000), Woodstock Chamber of Commerce & Industry ($10,000) and the Challenger Learning Center for Science & Technology ($10,000). Available funds over and above the “Tier 1” amounts will be distributed among qualifying “Tier 2” organizations, including the Mental Health Resource League, Northwest Area Arts Council, Woodstock Farmers Market, and numerous others. CARY

Library updates time frame for renovation project

The Cary Area Public Library, 1606 Three Oaks Road, reported that the original time frame for completion of its renovation project has been changed. Phase 1 is now scheduled to begin in late July and last 10 weeks. New pick-up and returns drive-up will be constructed on the east side of the building, and the roof and HVAC system will be replaced. Phase 2 is scheduled to begin in mid-September and conclude in four weeks. Study rooms in the building’s corners will be constructed, affecting foot traffic in the lobby and central areas of the main floor. Phase 3 is scheduled to begin in mid-October and last four weeks. The library’s collections will be repositioned, and the multi-purpose room will be renovated. The library plans no closures during the project, though the need may arise to occasionally close for a day or two due to noise or safety concerns. In addition, donations of materials will not be accepted until further notice, and the Fall Used Book Sale has been canceled.  Village earns budget presentation award for 17th year in row

The village reported that the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United State and Canada recently presented Lake in the Hills with the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the Fiscal Year 2016 budget period, marking the 17th consecutive year the village has received the award. In order to receive the award, a governmental unit must publish a budget document that meets program criteria as a policy document, as an operations guide, as a financial plan and as a communications device. In addition, a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation was presented to Village Administrator Gerald D.
