Family Fun Day, Veterans Memorial dedication on tap

The village announced that All American Family Fun Day will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 2 at Town Square, 11704 Coral St. The event, being held in conjunction with Huntley Farmers Market, includes a craft fair, face painting, kids’ games, a moonwalk, a mini parade, bike/kid/stroller decorating and more. Admission is free. In addition, the Huntley Area Veterans Foundation Memorial dedication ceremony will be held at noon. The newly constructed black granite monument honoring the six branches of the United States military — Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and National Guard — will be unveiled, and each branch’s flag will be flown at the memorial site. Library director Martens among Chamber honorees

During its Annual Dinner, held May 26 at the Crystal Lake Country Club, the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce presented Crystal Lake Public Library Director Kathryn I. Martens with the Athena Leadership Award. The award recognizes an individual for professional excellence, service to the community, and for actively assisting women in their attainment of leadership skills. In addition, Peter Affrunti of Affrunti Design & Management was named the Carl E. Wehde Award winner. Affrunti was recognized in part for donating countless hours to enhancing office space for many of Crystal Lake’s community organizations. Union-based utility services contractor INTREN was named the Robert O. Covey Business of the Year. INTREN supports several non-profit organizations in the area, and is highly involved with national women’s and Latino organizations with career education programs.  City to continue Brush Pick-Up Program in July

The city announced that it will continue its 2016 Brush Pick-Up Program, beginning July 11. All branches must be a minimum of three feet in length (longer is preferred), and must be placed at curbside before pick-up begins — but no earlier than one week prior to the start date. Branches must be stacked with the cut end facing the street. Stumps, bushes, plants, leaves or weeds will not be picked up, and storm-damaged trees should not be placed at curbside for pick-up. The time limit for pick-up is 20 minutes. After 20 minutes has elapsed, residents will be charged $125 an hour to continue pick-up, with a minimum charge of $50.  Police Dept. opens National Night Out coloring contest

In conjunction with National Night Out (Aug. 2), the Cary Police Department and the Citizen Police Academy are co-sponsoring a children’s coloring contest. The contest is open to all youth residents of Cary. Prizes will be awarded in four age groups (0-5, 6-8, 9-12 and 13 years old and up) on National Night Out. Entry forms containing a National Night Out image to be colored are available on the village’s website at www.caryillinois.com.  City offers parkway tree replacement program

The city announced that it is embarking on a replacement program for parkway trees lost to the Emerald Ash Borer. Residents interested in having a tree planted this fall on the public right-of-way at single-family residences should contact Superintendent of Forestry Tom Schmidt at 815-363-2162 or via email at tschmidt@ci.mchenry.il.us. Name, address and phone number must be provided. The tree-planting space must meet certain requirements in order to receive a new tree. The city will determine what species of tree will be planted. There is a limit of one tree per resident, and trees will be available — free of charge — on a first-come, first-served basis.  Fox River Grove

 Fireworks celebration to include pre-show entertainment

The village will hold its annual Fireworks Show at 9 p.m. July 9 at Picnic Grove Park, located on Birch Lane (north of Barberry Trail). The park will open at 6 p.m., and festivities include a live performance by local band One Step Forward. The Fox River Grove Lions Club and Lioness Club, the Cary-Grove Jaycees, Jaycee Ambassadors and Cary-Grove Masons will have food and beverages available for purchase. Each community group will donate half of the proceeds to the village’s fireworks fund. Entry to the park will not be allowed after 9 p.m., or prior to the start of the fireworks display.  Village earns 15th straight Tree City USA honor

The village reported that Lakewood has been recognized as a Tree City USA for the 15th consecutive year. The program is sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation, in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the U.S. Forest Service. Lakewood achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: maintaining a tree board or department; implementing a community tree care ordinance; maintaining an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita; and providing an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
