EUREKA – The Woodford County Board Room was filled with veterans and their families Tuesday morning, as a special Veterans’ Day ceremony was presented in their honor by Sheriff Jim Pierceall and area veterans’ organizations. State Senator Dan Rutherford (R-53) presented the keynote address and County Board member and Pastor Jim Fyke gave the invocation.
Rutherford recalled for the crowd visits last summer to the new World War II museum in New Orleans and to a local museum in a small county run entirely by volunteers. He said he was struck by the impact both had on him. Both involved veterans of different ages, young children and older visitors, each of whom interacted with the other to offer an insight into the effort and sacrifices made by our military veterans under the most demanding circumstances.
The personal nature of that interaction gave him an understanding of the true meaning of those vets’ service in a way he had never experienced it before, he said. He came away from the visits with an even greater appreciation for the nation’s veterans.
