Shammo hired as McHenry County Assistant State’s Attorney

The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s office announced that Judy Shammo has been hired as an Assistant State’s Attorney and will join the Misdemeanor Division. Prior to joining the State’s Attorney’s office, Shammo worked for a private firm handling foreclosure defense and real estate matters. Shammo completed her Juris Doctor at Chicago-Kent College of Law, and also worked as a 711 intern at the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office under the supervision of an attorney handling foreclosure and real estate matters. McHenry County Land Conservancy to host Annual Celebration Brunch 

The Land Conservancy of McHenry County (TLC) will host the 2017 Annual Celebration Brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 29 at D’Andrea Banquets, 4419 U.S. Highway 14, Crystal Lake. In addition to brunch, the event includes awards and recognition for contributors to TLC’s mission (to preserve natural, agricultural and scenic land in and around McHenry County), Emmy Award-winning storyteller and author Jim May as featured guest speaker, a live auction hosted by Woodstock Mayor Brian Sager, a silent auction and a drawing. McHenry Township Senior Center names Gregory as new Activities Director 

McHenry Township announced that Jane Gregory has been hired as the new Activities Director for the McHenry Township Senior Center, 3519 N. Richmond Road, Johnsburg. Gregory, who holds a degree in Recreation Management, previously worked with various park districts as an activities/events coordinator, and with the Girl Scouts as a volunteer membership/program coordinator. In her new role, Gregory will work closely with the McHenry Township Senior Advisory Council to plan and implement programs and activities at the Senior Center. Spring Grove Community Spaghetti Dinner to benefit food pantry  

The Richmond-Spring Grove Area Rotary Club will host the Richmond-Spring Grove Community Spaghetti Dinner from 4-8 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Richardson Farm Christmas Tree Barn, 9407 Richardson Road. The dinner includes spaghetti, bread, salad, soft drinks, coffee and desserts. Carry-outs will be available. The event also includes raffle items. Admission is $12 (adults), $10 (ages 65 and up), $5 (ages 10 and under) and free (under age 5). All proceeds will benefit the Richmond-Spring Grove Community Food Pantry. Woodstock High School, 501 W. South St., announced that 23 students have been recognized as 2017-18 Illinois State Scholars for outstanding academic achievement.  City of Crystal Lake announces plans for new Mariano’s supermarket 

The city announced that a new Mariano’s supermarket store will be constructed at 105 Northwest Highway, currently the site of a Sears store that will close in mid-March. Demolition of the existing store and groundbreaking for Mariano’s is planned for spring, with construction expected to last through the year prior to an expected opening in 2018. The 74,800-square-foot building will feature Mariano’s signature glass rotunda, which houses a cafe area for customers. Cary-Grove High VEI team makes national competition 

Community High School District 155 announced that a team of Cary-Grove High School students taking VEI (Virtual Enterprises International) classes placed second among 20 teams at the VEI State Business Plan Competition, held at Northern Illinois University, in December. With its second-place finish, the team of Jack Bressett, Sam Briggs, Tom Cassidy, Sam Gamez, Jenny O’Malley, Chris Walther and Dillon Zasada advanced to the VEI National Competition, to be held in New York City, in April. VEI is an in-school, live, global business simulator that offers project-based, collaborative learning and the development of 21st Century skills in entrepreneurship, global business, problem solving, communication, personal finance and technology. Tree of Life’s Justice For All Ball to celebrate diversity 

The Tree of Life Universalist Congregation, 5603 Bull Valley Road, will host its Justice For All Ball from 7-10 p.m. Jan. 28. The family-friendly, all-ages event is being held to celebrate diversity and self-expression, and welcomes all walks of life, including members of the LGBT community. Non-alcoholic refreshments and light snacks will be available, and music will be provided by The Red Garage, a Chicago-based blues/rock/soul/jazz band. The price of admission is an at-the-door-donation of choice.
