Univ. of Ill. Extension Master Gardeners Plant Sale on tap

The University of Illinois Extension McHenry County Master Gardeners Plant Sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 21 (rain or shine) outside the University of Illinois Extension building, located at 1102 McConnell Road, Woodstock. The selection of plants will include perennials, annuals, herbs and vegetable starts. Most of the plants have been grown by University of Illinois Extension McHenry County Master Gardeners and are well-suited to area gardens. This marks the first stand-along plant sale conducted by the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners. In the past, the organization offered its sale in conjunction with the annual Garden Walk, which takes place the second Saturday in July. The change was made to accommodate gardeners looking for healthy, hardy plants that will thrive in the spring. Mental Health Board to host Town Hall Meeting

In the spirit of raising public awareness during Mental Health Awareness Month (May), the McHenry County Mental Health Board (MBH) is inviting area community members to attend the MBH Town Hall Meeting at 6 p.m. May 18 at the McHenry County Mental Health Board, 620 Dakota St., Crystal Lake. The meeting will include discussions on mental health, substance use disorder, and intellectual and developmental disability related services and community needs. Community members are encouraged to contribute to the local conversation by sharing their stories of success and/or offering ideas for system improvement and enhancement. Luncheon to celebrate Older Americans Month

In celebration of Older Americans Month, Senior Care Volunteer Network McHenry will host its Older Americans Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 16 at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 451 W. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake. The event includes free lunch and a presentation by Dawn Pruchniak, author of, “Your Legacy Wardrobe: The Easy Way to Understand and Organize Your Life Affairs So You Can Live Ready.” Admission is free. Golf outing to benefit St. John the Baptist School

The village announced that St. John’s Playday Golf Outing, a fundraising event to benefit St. John the Baptist Catholic School, 2304 W. Church St., will be held May 12 at McHenry Country Club, 820 N. John St., McHenry. Registration begins at 11 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 12:45 p.m., cocktails at 5 p.m. and dinner at 5:45 p.m. Fees are $40 (dinner only), $100 (9

 Blue Star Banner program to honor active military vets

The city announced that applications are now being accepted by the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce for the Blue Star Banner program. As part of the program — a joint effort between the city and the Chamber — banners honoring City of Crystal Lake residents who serve in the military and are actively deployed will be displayed on light poles on the Virginia Street corridor. Honoree applications and banner sponsorship forms can be sent to: Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce, 427 W. Virginia St., Crystal Lake, Ill. 60014 (Attn: Mary Margaret Maule). Applications will be reviewed on a quarterly basis by a committee that includes members of Crystal Lake VFW Post 12014, American Legion Post 171 and TLS Veterans. A maximum of 16 banners will be installed in May and November, and each set will remain up for about three to six months. Banners will be presented to the nominating party upon removal. Public Works Dept. to host open house event

In celebration of Public Works Week, the village will host the Public Works and Engineering Department Open House from 10 a.m. to noon May 20 at the main Public Works facility, located at 11000 Bakley St.. Attendees will experience a behind-the-scenes look at the skills, tools and equipment used to maintain the village.  Algonquin

 Village partners with state for liquor license inspections

In an effort to improve the allocation of alcohol beverage compliance resources, the State of Illinois and the village recently joined forces to launch the Algonquin Liquor Inspection Pilot Program. Under the agreement, the Algonquin Police Department has begun carrying out standard liquor inspection for all Algonquin license holders on behalf of the state. Utilizing existing state resources, the Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC) is providing financial assistance and training for designated local inspectors. the village began conducting inspections of its 73 license holders upon the completion of ILCC training in April, and will continue through June 30 when the pilot program concludes. Inspections address areas of concern, including health and sanitation, license and insurance verifications, and deceptive practices.
