Dept. of Health to host Children’s Health & Safety Fair

The McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) will host the Children’s Health & Safety Fair from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 26 at McHenry County College, 8900 U.S. Highway 14, Crystal Lake. The event features more than 40 educational health and safety exhibitors, and children in attendance will be given a participation card. After filling the card with stamps at different booths, children can turn it in for a free school supply box — and simultaneously be entered in a raffle for chance to win a new bike and helmet. Low-cost school physical appointments, dental exams and vaccines also will be available. School physical appointments for uninsured or under-insured children can be made by calling 779-220-9300. Dental exams will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. On the day of the fair, walk-in, low-cost vaccinations for eligible children will be offered at the MCDH Crystal Lake facility, located at 100 N. Algonquin

Village seeks artwork for annual Community Art Program

The village’s Public Arts Commission is soliciting artwork loans from artists for the 11th Annual Community Art Program. Participating artists must be willing to loan works of art for public display for up to one year. The program is open to all visual artists who are professional and of serious intent; artists working in any permanent media; and artists with knowledge of public art (including materials, techniques and public art processes) and knowledge of appropriateness for public display (in terms of scale, material and content). In addition, all selected artwork must be delivered to the village “ready-to-hang” for immediate display. Artists interested in submitting artwork for consideration must complete and submit an application packet (available at www.algonquin.org). The submittal deadline is Aug. 4. Library’s Garden Book Club to host special program

The Johnsburg Public Library District’s Garden Book Club will host a special program with author Ed Yong at 10 a.m. July 22 in the library garden, 3000 N. Johnsburg Road. Yong will discuss his book, “I Contain Multitudes: The Microbes Within Us and a Grander View of Life,” which presents a “microbe’s-eye view” of the world that reveals a radically different picture of life based on the fact that every creature on Earth is home to millions of microbes and other bacteria. McHenry

New sewer and water rates set to take effect

The city announced that residential water and sewer rate adjustments will go into effect on Aug. 1. As part of the Fiscal Year 2017/2018 budget process, sewer and utility maintenance rate adjustments were recommended. The City Council then approved an ordinance amending water and sewer rates on June 5. The new water rate will be $3.34 per 1,000 gallons (within corporate limits), representing a decrease of 14 cents per 1,000 gallons; and $5.01 per 1,000 gallons (outside corporate limits), a decrease of 21 cents per 1,000 gallons. The new sewer rate will be $4 per 1,000 gallons (within corporate limits), an increase of 36 cents per 1,000 gallons; and $6 per 1,000 gallons (outside corporate limits), an increase of 54 cents per 1,000 gallons. Police Dept. to host benefit lunch at local eatery

The city announced that the Crystal Lake Police Department will host a benefit lunch for Special Olympics Illinois from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 28 at Texas Roadhouse, 835 Cog Circle. Attendees can enjoy a “free lunch” (from a limited menu), served by several uniformed Crystal Lake police officers. Huntley

Bike Huntley event includes ride with cops, picnic

Bike Huntley 2017, a community bike ride with members of the Huntley Police Department, will be held on July 30. The 8.5-mile ride will kick off at 2 p.m., beginning at Town Square (on Coral Street) and continuing through village streets and parks. The free event will conclude with a cookout and picnic at Town Square, beginning at 4 p.m. All participants must complete a registration and waiver form, available on the village website at www.huntley.il.us. Tricycles, bikes with training wheels (or Big Wheels), motorized vehicles and scooters will not be allowed, and all participants must wear a bike helmet. Police Dept. offers Citizens Police Academy

The village announced that the Cary Police Department is accepting applications for the 2017 Citizens Police Academy. Classes will meet from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, beginning Sept. 27 and continuing Dec. 6, at Village Hall, 655 Village Hall Drive. A graduation ceremony will be held at the Cary Village Board meeting on Dec. 19. Citizens Police Academy is open individuals living or working in Cary. The first 20 applicants who successfully complete the application and

background check process will be accepted to participate. Applications (available at www.caryillinois.com) are due by Aug. 31.
