Library Friends Foundation to host MiniLinks fundraiser

The Huntley Area Public Library Friends Foundation will host MiniLinks at the Library, a special fundraising event, from 6-7:30 p.m. Aug. 4. The event includes nine holes of miniature golf inside the library, 3000 N. Johnsburg Road, as well as a pre-golf picnic dinner on the library lawn, back-to-school drawings for school supply items (for school-age golfers) and the MiniLinks Book Sale, featuring hardcover books for $1, paperbacks for 50 cents and children’s books for 25 cents. The book sale will continue from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 5 and noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 6. The fee for golfers is $3 per person and $10 per family. Admission is free for non-golfers. Lucky Bernie’s to host Grand Opening Celebration

Lucky Bernie’s, 9810 N. Route 47, an upscale restaurant, deli and bar serving gourmet sandwiches (with live music and video gaming), will host its Grand Opening Celebration from noon to midnight Aug. 4. The event will begin with an official ribbon cutting ceremony at noon, and includes a free sandwich drawing every hour, as well as 10 percent off on food purchases all day. Special offers include $15 wine samples, $10 meat and cheese platters, and $2 domestic beers.  Village offers drop-off/pick-up service for used sandbags

The village announced that it is offering residents an opportunity to drop off used sandbags at the Village of Fox Lake Public Works Facility, 216 Washington St., under the “Sandbag Dump” sign. Otherwise, residents can place used sandbags in a stack or pile (separate from other discarded items) at the edge of their property (near the water-line or road) for pick-up. To expedite the process, residents are encouraged to work together with neighbors to place used sandbags in a common area for pick-up. Johnsburg

Annual Steak Fry to benefit Johnsburg Jr. Skyhawks

The Johnsburg Community Club, 2315 W. Church St., will host the Johnsburg Jr. Skyhawks’ 4th Annual Steak Fry, beginning at 5 p.m. Aug. 12. The event is a fundraiser for the Jr. Skyhawks, a non-profit feeder football organization offering tackle football (for ages 7-14, excluding incoming high school students) and flag football (ages 5-7 as of Sept. 1) programs. Tickets are $25, and include a steak dinner with potato, salad, dinner roll, desert and two beer or wine tickets. A cash bar also will be available. Village to host Document Destruction Day

The village announced that it will host Document Destruction Day from 9-11 a.m. Aug. 5 at the Spring Grove Municipal Centre parking lot, 7401 Meyer Road. Residents can bring up to 10 file-size boxes or paper shopping bags of sensitive/private documents and papers for secure destruction by Groot Industries, Inc. Park Dist. to host Blast on the Beach

The Crystal Lake Park District will host the Crystal Lake Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Blast on the Beach, beginning at 3 p.m. Aug. 5, at Main Beach, 300 Lake Shore Drive. The event includes a Kids Fun Fair and Kiddie Korral, a craft fair with more than 30 vendors, a variety of food vendors (including beer and wine), the Black Diamond Treasure Hunt (featuring hundreds of treats buried in the sand) and a live performance by area band Dick Diamond and the Dusters. Park Dist. to host Kids Garage Sale

The Cary Park District will host the Kids Garage Sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 12 at Lions Park, 1200 Silver Lake Road. Each registered child (ages 6-15 only) will have one “parking space” to sell unwanted toys, games, books and other items. All participants must be supervised by a parent or guardian. Barrington Hills

 Honor Ride & Run to feature Project Hero military vets

The village announced that the 7th annual Barrington Honor Ride & Run (BHHR) will be held on Aug. 13, starting at the Barrington Hills Park District, 361 Bateman Road. The event features a choice of three bike rides (14, 33 or 47 miles), a 5K trail run and a 1-mile fun walk/run through the Spring Lake Forest Preserve. This year’s event will include 150 military veterans who are participating in the Project Hero Great Lakes Challenge, a week-long, 465-mile bike ride from Minneapolis to Illinois scheduled to finish at the BHHR. Opening ceremonies (8 a.m.) include the Operation “Wild Horse” Mounted Color Guard, presented by Marine Corps League Detachment 1395 in partnership with Veterans R&R. Participation fees are $75 (bike rides), $55 (5K run) and $25 (1-mile fun run/walk). All proceeds will benefit Project Hero as part of the National Honor Ride series.
