Office building conversion gets OK

The owners of property at 95 Grant Street received approval from the City Council for a zoning waiver. The plan was on hold until the owners came up with a way to provide adequate parking. They managed that by a long-term lease agreement with a neighbor. The six-unit apartment building will have 14 parking spots available.

 

Fire chief retires after 34 years

Kevin Eriksen always wanted to be a fireman, so with encouragement from his wife, he applied in 1981. His last shift ended at 6 p.m. June 7 and retirement began. His son, Patrick, who followed in his footsteps and became a fireman, created a book filled with letters from prominent figures, including leaders in sports and politics, congratulations on his contributions to the community and on his retirement.

Temporary outpatient center opens

Advocate Medical group opened temporary offices at Route 47 and Regency Square Parkway. Providers at the site provide primary care, cardiology, audiology, physical therapy, and community wellness programs. A permanent site is slated for 2017 near I-90 on Route 47.

 

Marengo

$50.2 million interchange added to 5-year plan

McHenry County added a full interchange at I-90 and Route 23 to the transportation project to-do list. The county already paid more than $289,000 in motor-fuel taxes toward design costs. Marengo plans to zone it as industrial.

Case of drug-resistant tuberculosis in McHenry County

McHenry County Department of Health reports that on April 4 an individual from India infected with an extensively drug-resistant form of tuberculosis, also known as XDR-TB, entered the United States and then traveled to other states. On May 18, this individual visited family in McHenry County and, during this visit, sought treatment. The patient has since been transferred out of state for care. Individuals who were in close contact with the patient have been interviewed and are being monitored.

Lucky-E Kennel confines 30 sick dogs

Jeanette Everett, owner of Lucky-E Kennel, does not know whether the dogs there have canine flu or not. She does know the dogs are ill, and steps must be taken to contain the illness. Seven cases of canine flu are confirmed in McHenry County, with one fatality. About 90 percent of those dogs stricken with the illness recover after two to three weeks with treatment. Everett said she’s kept the sick dogs at her kennel confined. The staff disinfects the kennels daily.

Local lemonade stands go global

For the second straight year, Aubrey Hennig and her friends went global and encouraged a weekend-long event (June 6-7), that they dubbed Worldwide Lemonade Stand. Hennig started the Lemonade Brigade last year and raised more than $30,000 by selling lemonade for $1 a glass. The proceeds go to locals in need.
