6-year-old searches for bone marrow donor

Sophia Trujillo is in need of a bone-marrow donor. She suffers from severe aplastic anemia, an autoimmune disorder where her body does not make enough blood cells. This means she cannot fight off even mild illnesses like a cold, and she bruises easily. Although 70-90 percent of patients get better with immunosuppressive therapy, that didn’t work for Trujillo. Now she needs a bone-marrow transplant. Finding a match is difficult, in part, due to her Filipino and European heritage. Potential donors between the age of 18 and 60 years old can visit BeTheMatch.org to find out how to help.

Local man to drive around Woodstock Square blindfolded

Joe Diamond, 27, is already a world record holder for solving the world’s largest corn maze blindfolded! He will now be taking his sightless skills to behind the wheel of a car! On Sept. 11, as part of the Woodstock Artwalk, he will be driving a car around the Square while blindfolded. Local police will be shutting down traffic on the square for five minutes while the stunt takes place, and pedestrians will be held to the sidewalks for safety. The event is being done as a fundraiser for next year’s Artwalk. The producer of the event, John Heng, is hoping to raise $5,000. “This will go towards more advertising for the monthly events, as well as hiring more artists and performers,” Heng recently explained. To make the event slightly more enticing, Mayor of Woodstock Brian Sager has agreed to get in the passenger seat of the donated car as Joe Diamond makes the blind drive! This will only happen if the full $5000 is raised. Anyone can make a tax-deductible donation from $10 dollars up to $1,000 by visiting the website www.ArtwalkDonations.com. The money goes to the Old Courthouse Arts Center, a part of the Northwest Area Arts Council, a regional all-volunteer, 501(c)3 not for profit.
