McLean County 4-H chapter to hold daylong experiment program

Members of the McLean County Extension’s 4-H chapter will take part in a series of activities Saturday, Oct. 10, in conjunction with 4-H’s National Youth Science Day program. The experiments will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Children’s Discovery Museum, 101 E. Beaufort St., Normal, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Rader Family Farms, 1238 Ropp Road, Normal. ISHA, Bloomington renew agreement for 5 more years

The Illinois High School Association will continue offering its golf finals at two Bloomington-based courses — Prairie Vista and The Den — for five additional years, officials announced recently. More than 200 golfers from across the state take place in IHSA’s tournament annually. The arrangement also gives the golfers’ coaches, family and friends an opportunity to visit Bloomington. This year’s finals will be held from Oct. 16-17.  

Bloomington Police continue investigation into home invasion

Bloomington Police are sorting through evidence that could lead to an arrest linked to a home invasion in the 1100 block of Woodbury Place. The incident occurred about 11 p.m. Sept. 18. According to the department, a woman was inside the home when the invasion occurred. The woman told police a black man entered her bedroom, pointed a gun at her and ordered her to lay face down. The woman told police she heard another person enter her bedroom and yell, “I got it.” A safe is believed to have been the only item taken from the home. Both suspects subsequently fled in an unknown vehicle, in an unknown direction. Bloomington Police are asking anyone with information to contact Det. City launches Smartphone app, myBloomington

After a series of beta tests, the city of Bloomington’s Smartphone app, myBloomington, is available for download, municipal officials announced recently. The app is designed to offer residents and visitors an opportunity to tap into a number of features, including streamlined opportunities to report potholes and malfunctioning streetlights. The app can be accessed through the Google Play Store, the Apple App Store or online at www.cityblm.org/mybloomington.  

Bloomington Police recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Nationally, community advocates are putting the spotlight on the importance of domestic violence prevention throughout October as part of a month-long crusade. For its part, the Bloomington Police Department’s Domestic Violence Unit is taking part in the campaign by sharing details on the different types of resources that are available. Information on these resources can be viewed on the city’s website at www.cityblm.org. A five-year analysis by Bloomington Police reveals the department has perpetually responded to more than 1,000 calls annually. In 2010, there were 1,246 calls notched in the city, followed by 1,168 calls in 2011, 1,803 calls in 2012, 2,187 calls in 2013 and 1,845 calls in 2014.

Upcoming Illinois Wesleyan concert to celebrate new grand piano

In recognition of a recently donated Steinway Concert Grand Piano, the Illinois Wesleyan University School of Music will hold a free concert at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, in the Westbrook Auditorium, 1312 Park St., Bloomington. The program will include a piano recital with the school’s performing faculty members. Several pieces will be performed, including ones initially composed by Beethoven, Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Liszt.

Police Chief: officer who struck 2 pedestrians not at fault

A Normal police officer who struck two 20-year-old men with a squad car is not at fault, Police Chief Rick Bleichner announced recently. Bleichner, who declined to name the officer involved in the incident, said the officer accelerated his squad car at a traffic light in the intersection of Hovey Avenue and Main Street. During the acceleration, which occurred about 12:55 a.m. Sept. 19, the men ran in front of the squad, Bleichner said. The men were treated at a nearby medical facility. Upon further investigation, Bleichner said the men struck by the officer’s squad had been consuming alcohol..

2 Georgia residents accused of meth possession in LeRoy

Two residents from the state of Georgia were arrested by LeRoy Police on Sept. 26 through a series of drug-related offenses. The suspects, a 42-year-old woman and 40-year-old man, are accused by LeRoy officers of possessing methamphetamines. Police first encountered the Georgia pair after responding to a call about railroad property thefts. The bucket utility truck the man and woman were in matched the description of the offender at the railroad site, and they were taken into custody at a nearby truck stop.
