Caterpillar set to lay off 120 at East Peoria plant

Caterpillar Inc. plans indefinite layoffs of 120 workers beginning next week at the firm’s East Peoria plant.

The new layoffs are scheduled to take effect next Monday and come in the wake of an earlier round of 200 workers placed on indefinite leave in January at plants in East Peoria and Decatur.

Several reports stated the layoffs were due to weak conditions in markets for mining and construction equipment made at the East Peoria plant.

The layoffs come four months after Caterpillar announced plans to maintain its corporate headquarters in downtown Peoria, including a plan that will eventually span 31 acres on the city’s riverfront.

That campus would include a three tower complete in a six-block campus.

The multiyear project would feature with minor site preparation this year, but construction will not begin in 2015. Work continues with the city of Peoria – a key partner throughout the study – on a redevelopment agreement and initiatives like campus design and downtown streetscaping, the company said..
