Illinois River on the rise
Boaters, fishermen and others who like to use the Illinois River for their recreation will need to take a break. The Coast Guard has issued a ban on recreational activities on the river from Chillicothe to Havana until further notice. The river in its current stage is not only dangerous for the people using it for recreation, but it is equally dangerous for the rescue personnel who have to save those who get into trouble. The Illinois Conservation Police will be arresting or ticketing those who disregard the ban.
The flood in the spring of 2013 reached a record 29.35 feet. On June 19 the river at East Peoria was 5 feet over flood stage. At Peoria where flood stage is 18 feet, the river depth was 25 feet.

Pekin landmark included in National Register of Historic Places
The North Eighth Street Plaza has received recognition on the National Register of Historic Places. It is an early example of what has become known as a ‘strip mall.’ Built in 1950, it was designed to be convenient and close to those who needed its services. The mini-mall heralded the end of the concentrated downtown shopping center with it’s parking meters and paid parking lots.
