STATE

Four presidents honored in new exhibit

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield has a new exhibit that looks at what four U.S. presidents with ties to Illinois had in common and how their time in the state affected their lives.

The exhibit, “From Illinois to the White House: Lincoln, Grant, Reagan, Obama,” is being done as part of Illinois’ bicentennial celebration. Located inside the museum, it runs through the end of the year and includes historic artifacts that show the achievements of the presidents as politicians and communicators. Also included are items from the presidents’ wives.

COUNTY

Amnesty proves profitable for county

Well, it is no $4 million, but it was a start.

The Tazewell County Circuit Clerk Office’s first Amnesty Week brought in $55,000 last week. The county offered a deal to defendants who’ve been slow to pay fines and fees in their court cases.

A total of 109 defendants paid an average of nearly $505 between March 12 and March 16 and, in doing so, avoided 30 percent more in payments required if their bills were turned over to a private collection firm the county employs to pursue late payers.

The clerk’s office provided that incentive to convince people they should use their income tax returns to pay their court bills in full.
