Anti-abuse center promotes longtime staffer

A longtime staff member of the Center for Prevention of Abuse has been named the center’s new associate executive director. The center helps women, men and children live free from violence and abuse. All victim services are free and confidential, and offered to residents of Tazewell, Woodford and Peoria counties.

Joyce DeRenzy recently celebrated her 20th anniversary at the center, and has served in many capacities, including most recently as the director of the Adult Protective Services Department, Long-term Care Ombudsman Program and Family Violence Intervention Project.

In addition to her new role overseeing the day-to-day operations of the center, she will continue to supervise the Long-Term Care Ombudsmen and Family Violence Intervention Project in East Peoria.

Temporary early voting sites set up for this week

Registered voters in Tazewell County can vote early for the Nov. 8 general election at these temporary sites:

  • Oct. 12: Delavan Township, 212 Locust St., from 7-10 a.m. and 4-7 p.m.
  • Oct. 14: Morton Township, 300 W. Jefferson St.; Washington Township, 58 Valley Forge Road; and Folepi’s Market Place, 2200 E. Washington St., East Peoria; from 7-10 a.m. and 4-7 p.m.
  • Oct. 15-Oct. 16: Morton Township, 300 W. Jefferson St.; Washington Township, 58 Valley Forge Road; and Folepi’s Market Place, 2200 E. Washington St., East Peoria; from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Donate canned food, get Halloween costume

Morton Public Library’s costume exchange will be held Oct. 14 and Oct. 15.

Those who donated costumes earlier this month and have tickets get first choice at 10 a.m. Oct. 14. Then, the exchange is open to the general public, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the following day. Those who do not have tickets can get a free costume with a donation of canned food.

Police hold drug disposal day

The Morton Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration will offer the public safe disposal of prescription pills, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 22. Expired, unused and unwanted drugs and patches should be brought to the Morton Police Department, 375 W. Birchwood St., Morton.

Patches also will be accepted, however, liquids, needles and sharps cannot be accepted. The service is free and anonymous, and no questions will be asked.

Book to connect Morton with readers around the world

Morton Public Library will take part in the Big Library Read, the world’s largest digital book club that connects millions of readers around the world with the same eBook at the same time.

From Oct. 13-27, Morton Library patrons will be able to borrow the eBook, “This is Where it Ends” by Marieke Nijkamp, and participate in a worldwide version of a local book club. There will be no waitlists for this No. 1 New York Times bestseller. Big Library Read is facilitated by OverDrive, eBook and audiobook platform, from the library.

The young adult novel is a story of an all-too familiar situation: a school shooting. It follows four teens who face what is every student’s worst nightmare: a boy with a gun, and is told from the students’ perspective.

The book can be downloaded for free beginning Oct. 13. Patrons who need help downloading it should visit the library’s help desk.

PEKIN

Library teaches iMovie in the Making

Seventh- and eighth-graders can learn the technology to record, edit and produce a short film using iMovie on the Mac at free sessions to be held at Pekin Public Library, 301 S. Fourth St. Instruction begins 3-5 p.m. Oct. 13.

Sign-up is required. Students must be dedicated to attending all or most of the sessions in order to complete the film. Students’ films (developed by working in teams) will be premiered to the community at the last session, 5 p.m. Oct. 27
