Hospital will be site again for Fresh Food pick-ups

Advocate Eureka Hospital, 101 S. Major St., Eureka, will once again serve as a seasonal produce pick-up location for the Tri County Fresh Food Hub, as well as a stop for the Mobile Fresh Food Van when services begin again this spring.

The van will be at the hospital from 10-11 a.m. on Fridays. The start date for the season will be announced at a later time.

The Food Hub offers weekly or bi-weekly subscriptions for locally-grown fresh produce that are then delivered to pick-up locations such as Eureka Hospital from late May through late October. For those not wishing to subscribe, the Mobile Fresh Food Van will have produce available to purchase on-site, as would be sold at a farmer’s market. All of the produce comes from farms and gardens within a 60-mile radius, and any surplus crops not used for subscription orders or sold on the van are donated to area food pantries.

Strider Bike program is topic of open house

Pekin Park District will hold a Strider Bike open house from 8-9 a.m. April 1 in the warming room of Memorial Ice Arena, 1701 Court St., Pekin. The open house will explain the district’s Strider Bike program. Strider Balance Bikes are training bikes without pedals, which proponents say are better than tricycles. There is no age limit for the bike’s use, but the bikes are tailored for children who are just starting to walk up to those who are learning to ride bikes. For more information, call (309) 347-7275.

Seniors to hold dinner to raise funds for trip

The senior class of Faith Baptist Christian School will raise funds for its upcoming missionary and educational trip by hosting a chicken dinner and family fun event March 31. Dinner will be served from 5-7 p.m. in the dining room of the school, 1501 Howard Court, Pekin. The dining room will remain open until 8 p.m. A silent auction, children’s games and entertainment, including visits by Homer of the Peoria Chiefs and the Chick-fil-A cow, will be part of the event. Funds raised will help to finance the senior class’s April trip to New York City and Washington, D.C. Tickets are $7, in advance, $8 at the door and are available from any FBCS junior or senior as well as the school office.

Two book events for older readers

The Morton Public Library, 315 W. Pershing, is holding programs for young adults (YA) and adults. “My Life with the Walter Boys,” is the YA book to be discussed in a group that will meet at 6:30 p.m. April 4. The book, written by Ali Novak, centers on the prim, proper, and always perfect Jackie Howard. When her world is turned upside down by tragedy, Jackie must learn to cut loose and be part of a family again. Contact the library at (309) 263-2200 for a copy of the book.

“Art of the Pie” will be discussed at 4 p.m. April 3. If you participated in the Big Library Read, March 16-30, or you just love talking about pie join, the discussion of this delicious cookbook by Kate McDermott. Pie will be served. Register at mortonlibrary.org.

Library offers fun programs for youngsters

The Morton Library is offering programs for students in various grades.

Cubelets are magnetic blocks that can be snapped together to make an endless variety of robots with no programming and no wires. Students in grades 3-6 can learn how to use them at 3:30 p.m. March 22.

Students from seventh grade through senior year of high school are invited to a Board Game Party held 4-6 p.m. March 24. Games, snacks and drinks will be provided, with multiple games to choose from.

Second- to fifth-graders can get gross at 4 p.m. March 30. In Grossology, they will make slime, eat kitty litter cake and have fun with other messy stuff.
