Bible-inspired Musicals Topic of Eureka College Presentation

EUREKA – Eureka College associate professor of theatre Marty Lynch will present “The Bible According to Musical Theatre: A Survey of Musicals That Use Scripture as Source Material” at 7:30 PM, March 20 in the Cerf Center at Eureka College. A reception will follow.

The free, public presentation will explore musicals that take their inspiration from the Bible.

“When it comes to musicals, inspiration can come from anywhere,” Lynch said. “But no one place has inspired more musicals than the Bible, and retelling the stories has become one of the most celebrated traditions of American theatre.”

Lynch will discuss musicals based on stories from Genesis and other books in the Old Testament, the New Testament and other Bible-based sources. Featured musicals will include “Godspell,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and many more, Lynch said.

The presentation is the second of three Clarence R. Noe Dean’s Lectures by Eureka College faculty members this academic year.

The final lecture will be “Investigating Shapes to Understand Space” by associate professor of mathematics Prabhu Venkataraman at 7:30 PM, April 15 in the Cerf Center.
