EUREKA – Artwork depicting social stereotypes by Eureka College senior Brittany Hougham of Wapella will be on display through Feb. 17 in Burgess Hall Art Gallery at Eureka College. An opening reception will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 1 in the gallery.  

The exhibit includes brightly colored paintings and oversized sculptures depicting 21st century stereotypes, including “contemporary gangsters, nerds and the typical American redneck,” Hougham said. “The works have a three-dimensional aspect that further explores the labels given to these individuals,” she said.

“The show invites viewers to think critically about each stereotype in today’s society. Having experienced stereotyping, I want to bring awareness to this simple game of ‘name calling’ that many may not realize they are playing,” Hougham said.

Much of the work is inspired by pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, who influences Hougham’s artistic style. 

The Eureka College gallery is located on the third floor of Burgess Memorial Hall, 300 E. College Ave. It is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment by calling (309) 467-6866. Admission is free.
