Motorists charged in holiday crackdown

The state’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign in Woodford County this holiday season resulted in the arrest of two drivers charged with blood alcohol concentrations over the legal limit of 0.08 and the arrest of one driver who received a citation for not wearing a seat belt.

The campaign waged during the holiday season from Dec. 16 to Jan. 1 was designed to keep drunk drivers off the roads and achieve zero fatalities.

Woodford deputies also looked for other driving infractions that have the potential to put Innocent drivers at risk. Here is a list of other citations written during the campaign:

  • Speeding, 11
  • Driving while license suspended, 2
  • No insurance, 2
  • Talking on the cell phone while driving, 1
  • Fugitive from justice, 1
  • Drug related, 2
  • Other, 1

Administrative assistant gets EC staff honor

Becky Duffield, an administrative assistant in the Eureka College Office of Student Life, has been selected as the college’s 2016 recipient of the Staff Recognition Award.

Duffield began at EC in August 1992 as an administrative assistant in the department of athletics. She made the transition to the Office of Student Life in 2001. She has played a pivotal role in the operations of Eureka’s Cerf Center for nearly two decades.

In addition to her service to EC, Duffield has been a Cub Scout/Boy Scout leader in Roanoke, a Sunday School teacher at Roanoke Methodist Church and a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate for Abused and Neglected Children) in Peoria County.

The Office of Student Life supports Eureka College’s mission of excellence in learning, service, and leadership by providing co-curricular educational opportunities for the student body. The department works with students to achieve individual growth, leadership development, civic engagement and academic, personal and professional success.

To be eligible for the annual award, individuals must be a member of the Eureka College community who leads by example and is respected for his or her work ethic, moral character and willingness to help others. Among other criteria, recipients must best exemplify “the spirit of Eureka” with respect to supporting the college’s mission of cultivating excellence in learning, service, and leadership through relevant activities and roles for each employee position. Recipients also must be active and engaged in service on and/or off campus and committed to having a positive impact on those who work around them and those they serve.

Church offers marriage counseling program

On Jan. 18, Crosspoint Community Church in Eureka will be launching a new community group designed to help marriages. The group, called ReEngage, will meet weekly from 6:45-8:15 p.m. Wednesdays through April at the church, 951 County Road, 1625 E. This group can help any marriage, whether couples are looking to make a good marriage, better, or a struggling marriage, stronger.

Kiwanis 2017 officials installed

The Eureka Greater Area Kiwanis Club’s officers for 2017 include President Jyl Zubiate, Secretary Nancy Aldridge and Treasurer Janelle Yow. They were installed into office by Kiwanis Division 20 Lt. Gov. Ron Givens.

The Kiwanis Club meets at Hardees the first Wednesday and the third Monday of each month at 12:30pm.  Anyone interested in service to the community is welcome to attend.  For more information call (309) 467-4750.

METAMORA

Coffee to return to old general store

Local coffee drinkers will have a new place to purchase their beverage of choice when a coffee shop moves to Metamora Square. The former occupant and coffee shop at 101 W. Partridge St., Historic Grounds, closed last year but will be replaced with another like-minded business. Starting this spring, Eli’s Coffee will operate out of the historic old general store.

The Metamora location will mark the third one for Eli’s Coffee, which has shops in Morton and Tremont. In addition to coffee, Eli’s offers bakery items, a deli menu and catering services. Eli’s Coffee owners are Rachel and Weston Berchtold. An opening date has not been announced.
