Carson’s, Bon-Ton closings eliminate 1,800 jobs

More than 2,000 retail jobs will disappear from Illinois this summer.

The closing of Carson’s department stores and their sister stores, Bon-Ton and Bergner’s, account for 1,890 of the pending retail job losses in the state, most in the Chicago area.

Layoffs related to the bankruptcy of Bon-Ton, the stores’ parent company, will begin June 5, according to documents filed with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. No end date for the layoffs was provided by the company.

The number of workers losing their jobs because of the closing of Bergner’s, Bon-Ton and Carson’s department stores total:

  • Bergner’s, Peoria — 151
  • Bon-Ton, Naperville — 61
  • Carson’s, Chicago — 115
  • Carson’s, Chicago Ridge — 207
  • Carson’s, Evergreen Park — 134
  • Carson’s, Lincolnwood — 135
  • Carson’s, Lombard — 220
  • Carson’s, Mount Prospect — 192
  • Carson’s, Norridge — 214
  • Carson’s, North Riverside — 159
  • Carson’s, Orland Park — 311
  • Carson’s, Wilmette — 142

“We would like to thank the loyal customers who have shopped at these locations and express deep gratitude to our team of hard-working associates for their commitments to Bon-Ton and to serving our customers,” Bill Tracy, president and chief executive officer for the Bon-Ton stores, said this winter in announcing store closures.

Also adding to the loss of retail jobs this summer is the closing of the Sears store at Six Corners on the Northwest Side of Chicago in July. The 113 employees at the Chicago department store will be laid off between July 8 and July 29, according to the company.

The Bon-Ton and Sears closures will mean job losses for 2,154 individuals.

Other layoffs in the Chronicle circulation area that will be occurring, according to paperwork filed with the state’s Department of Commerce are (per county):

 

Cook

  • Chatwells at Chicago International Charter Schools, a catering firm, will be eliminating 84 positions June 30 because it lost a contract.
  • APCO Acquisition Co., an industrial valve manufacturer in Schaumburg, will be getting rid of 61 employees as the firm relocates.

DuPage

  • Acceptance Auto Insurance, an insurance agency and brokerage in Lombard, will be closing and consolidating operations, eliminating 52 positions between June 1 and July 31.
  • Durham School Services, a bus and other motor vehicle transit system in Naperville, will be closing June 30 because it lost a contract, meaning 152 workers will be let go.

Lake

  • Aramark Facility Services at Lake Forest College, a food service contractor, will be closing May 31 because it lost a contract and 81 individuals will lose their jobs.
