Attorneys representing former Republican Congressman Aaron Schock have reached an agreement with federal prosecutors over thousands of documents under review in the criminal investigation of the Peoria politician.

The agreement ends a dispute that dragged on for several months between Schock’s defense team and the office of the U.S. attorney of the  Central District of Illinois John Lewis over which documents the former lawmaker should be required to turn over to authorities.

Lewis even requested a federal grand jury issue a second subpoena for those documents in early November.

Schock and his attorneys claimed some of the documents were covered by attorney-client privilege or were outside the scope of the investigation. The Justice Department countered those arguments and demanded that Schock turn over the documents.

The U.S. Justice Department is looking into allegations that Schock, 34,  improperly used taxpayer money and received tens of thousands of dollars in federal reimbursements for travel costs and other personal  expenses.

Schock has denied any wrongdoing and no charges have been filed. He resigned from office in March 31. Darrin LaHood was chosen through a special election to succeed Schock as U.S representative for Illinois’s’ 18th Congressional District, which includes all or portions of several central Illinois counties including Peoria, McLean,Tazewell and Woodford counties.
