Volunteer drivers sought

The Volunteer Transportation Program coordinated by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is seeking drivers to help senior citizens access important appointments.

Being able to drive to doctor’s offices, therapy appointments, or banking and grocery shopping is something we often take for granted, but for a senior who has given up their driver’s license, it is a big concern.

Senior Services Associates key mission is to help senior citizens stay happy and healthy in their own homes and to help them stay socially connected with their communities. As the local sponsor of the nationally recognized RSVP, Senior Services is seeking volunteers, 55 years of age and older, with good driving records, to help their neighbors access important appointments through the Volunteer Transportation Program. Rides are scheduled on an appointment basis for seniors over the age of 60, who may not be able to use other transportation programs such as Kendall Area Transit or Ride in Kane.

Volunteers drive their own cars, and donate their time to help a senior neighbor in need. Through RSVP, these volunteers are connected to a national group of volunteers offering service through the Senior Corps. They receive insurance benefits while serving others too.

The Volunteer Transportation Program is just one of many service opportunities available through RSVP. For more information about volunteering, or to ask about getting a ride to an important appointment, call Barb Nadeau at (630) 553-5777.

Volunteer Opportunities with Senior Services

Senior Services Associates of Kane, Kendall & McHenry Counties, dedicated to helping senior citizens stay healthy and happy in their own homes, offers assistance for seniors including diverse opportunities to volunteer in the community.

Through the National Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, RSVP, volunteers ages 55 and older participate in service projects to several local agencies. Some volunteer at the Senior Services office at the Beecher Community Center, 908 Game Farm Road in Yorkville, preparing congregate and home delivered meals, serving meals, in office duties and in various activities at the center. Volunteers also serve at other offices in the county, at food pantries, at schools, and in social service agencies. Volunteers help their peers through the Volunteer Transportation Program too.

There are over 20 different sites where volunteers are serving their neighbors through RSVP of Southern Kane and Kendall Counties, and multiple service opportunities at these sites. RSVP allows participants to choose where, when and how often they want to serve, along with the knowledge that their efforts are being counted towards the greater good.

For more information about the RSVP program, and programs offered at Senior Services Associates, call (630) 553-5777.

Sandwich

Library to pilot extended business hours

The Sandwich Public Library District recently announced it will be piloting extended business hours starting this fall. After an overwhelming response from a recent survey, the library will be expanding its hours in hopes that more of the community will be able to utilize its services. “I’m thrilled to be able to increase our service,” said Library Director Sarah Horn. “Since I arrived, residents have been asking for longer hours at the library, both opening earlier and staying open later. This is a test phase to gauge actual usage during the expanded hours, but I know the Library Board is eagerly awaiting the results to make the best choice possible for permanently expanding library business hours.” Effective after the close of the Sandwich Fair on Sept. 14- 19th of December 2015, the extended library hours will be as follows: Monday- Thursday — 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Friday — 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday — 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and closed Sunday.

Oswego

The Village of Oswego Cultural Arts Commission is inviting all visual artists to apply for Art off the Rails, a new interactive art experience. The event will take place outdoors in Historic Downtown Oswego on Main Street from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 16. Submissions will be juried with prizes awarded in different categories.

Applicants from a wide range of artistic practices are encouraged to apply, including long-standing as well as new and emerging artists. Artist demonstrations are encouraged and all artists may offer their work for sale. No commission fees will be applied to any sales. All art must be original work by the artist. Prints are acceptable if they are clearly labeled as such. Accepted artists will receive a 10-by-10-foot space to exhibit for the fee of $50. Artists who demonstrate during the event will receive a reduced rate of $25 for the event. Artist demonstrations must be at least 15 minutes per hour, during each hour of the event.

Accepted artists are responsible for providing their own tables and exhibition items for each space. Tents are strongly encouraged as the event is outdoors and can protect you and your art from sun, heat, and rain. If you are demonstrating, it is also highly recommended that you have an assistant in your booth to help you with sales, since demonstrations tend to encourage people to purchase artwork. The application can be accessed at: http://www.oswegoil.org/2015ArtOfftheRailsArtist.pdf
