An Aurora man has been charged with robbery after allegedly jumping over a Walgreens pharmacy counter and taking drugs from a pharmacist at knifepoint, Aurora police said.
Bail for the suspect, Adam Hayward, 38, 2400 block of Oakfield Court, was set at $10,000.
According to Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli, Hayward entered the Walgreens, 2300 block of Ogden Avenue, Aurora, around 8:45 a.m. on Oct. 8 and headed toward the pharmacy. He allegedly jumped over the pharmacy counter where a 58-year-old female pharmacist was working, and he pulled out a large knife, according to police.
Ferrelli said Hayward demanded Hydrocodone and Xanax from the woman, who then took Hayward to where the drugs were stored.
Hayward grabbed a container of both medications, jumped back over the pharmacy counter, and fled the store, police said.
Walgreens employees were able to spot Hayward entering a blue Chevrolet Cobolt which fled eastbound on Ogden Avenue. Responding officers used video footage that had captured the Cobolt’s license plate, and honed in on Hayward as a suspect.
They setup just down the street from Hayward’s residence and waited for him to return to the area.
Ferrelli said that around 11:15 a.m., one of the officers lying in wait spotted Hayward driving northbound on Oakfield Court. They pulled behind him, activated their lights, and Hayward came to an immediate stop, Ferrelli said.
Hayward was taken into custody without incident near Eola Road and Oakfield Court.
After being interviewed by detectives, the DuPage County State’s Attorney issued the charge of robbery.
