GOOD HOUSEKEEPING REPORTS: Easy ways to clean anything

Your bathroom will sparkle after following our cleaning tips. (Photo by Mike Garten)

Say goodbye to stubborn stains, dust and grime. Here’s our top-to-bottom guide to making every room sparkle and shine.

GLEAMING KITCHEN

De-stink your garbage

Stash a scent-lifting sachet in the bottom of your trash can to minimize smells.

GH Lab Pick: Fresh Wave Odor Removing Packs contain little pearls of plant oils that eliminate odors for up to 60 days.

Conquer cabinet grime

Wipe sticky spots around pulls with a cloth dipped in a mix of dish soap and warm water, or an all-purpose cleanser. Wipe with a clean cloth.

GH Lab Pick: Parker & Bailey Kitchen Cabinet Cream is safe for wood.

Zap cooking grease

Pop out your range hood’s mesh filter (check first that it’s removable). Clean it in hot, sudsy water or the dishwasher.

GH Lab Pick: Dissolve baked-on grime from metal with Krud Kutter Kitchen Degreaser All-Purpose Cleaner.

Refresh your fridge

Don’t forget to clean behind the bins and shelf tracks. Drips and food particles can cause odors and mold. Wipe with a warm, sudsy cloth. Rinse and dry.

GH Lab Pick: Clean up dried spills with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Kitchen Scrubber.

Clean up glass shards and splinters

Broken dish or glass? Use a sticky lint roller, doughy bagel or thick slice of bread to pick up tiny pieces that you don’t want stuck in your vacuum or broom.

SPOTLESS LIVING SPACES

Shine a light on hidden dust

Flick on overhead fixtures to see cobwebs and particles lurking on moldings, fans and fixtures. With an extension tool, wipe globes and trim.

GH Lab Pick: Oxo’s Microfiber Extendable Duster is washable and pivots to get every spot. Take a floor-up approach: Pull furniture away from walls to vacuum under and behind. Nab dust along baseboards; clean out carpet dents with your upholstery tool (not the crevice attachment).

GH Lab Tip: Fluff matted carpet tufts with a steam iron or garment steamer.

Clean carpets, no machine needed

Deep-clean dingy traffic lanes with a moist cleaning powder. Shake it on, brush it in, wait 20 minutes and vacuum to refresh without wet cleaning.

GH Lab Pick: Resolve Carpet Cleaner Moist Powder absorbs dirt and odor.

Toss drapes in the laundry

Wash or dry-clean curtains – or, if they just need freshening, tumble them on the dryer’s air-only setting to remove dust.

GH Lab Pick: Dryel’s new in-dryer kit steams fabrics and includes a pen for stains and an odor-and-wrinkle-removing spray.

SPARKLING BATHROOM

Make tiles sing with our tips. Clean grout gives your whole room a facelift.

GH Lab Pick: CLR Bath & Kitchen Cleaner erases stains and soap scum sans bleach. Pair it with Casabella’s Smart Scrub Grout Brush – its pointed tip and double-sided design cleans in corners and at any angle.

Nix rust stains on sinks and bathtubs

Rust makes fixtures look old and worn. Never use chlorine bleach – it may set the stain. For light marks, saturate a cloth with lemon juice and apply. Scrub with paste of lemon juice and salt.

GH Lab Pick: You also can try a product made to remove rust, like Whink.

Rescue tub mats and shower curtains

Toss tub mats and plastic shower liners in the washer to remove gunk and mold. Use the gentle cycle and warm water. Add bleach if safe. Tumble-dry liners on low for two to three minutes.

ON ANOTHER MATTER …

GH Seal Star: RoC Skin Perfector

Testers saw results after only one week! And this ultrahydrating cream proved more and more effective as clinical evaluations progressed over the eight-week trial

Why it earned the GH Seal: RoC’s Retinol Correxion Max Daily Hydration Creme impressed our Beauty Lab chemists with its powerful ingredients, proven effects and unbeatable value.

All-Star Formula: It’s packed with retinol, a potent ingredient that boosts skin’s collagen production to minimize fine lines, speeds up cell turnover to reduce dark spots, and helps unclog pores.

Do-It-All Performance: Add this to your routine to target wrinkles and dark spots and hydrate. Start by applying every other night (retinol can be irritating at first), and always wear SPF.

Seven-Day Improvement: Need a quick skin refresh for a wedding or birthday? The cream left skin looking 32 percent smoother and more radiant after just one week of use.

Long-Term Results: After four weeks, people saw a further reduction in fine lines and eye wrinkles. After eight weeks, they reported fewer deep wrinkles and dark spots.
