Forest Park

Rotary club collecting coats for veterans

The Forest Park Rotary Club – a Satellite club of the Rotary Club of Oak Park-River Forest is launching a communitywide effort to secure gently used coats to donate to homeless veterans.  This effort will primarily go to help homeless or financially troubled veterans as the winter months approach. Coat sizes needed are large to XXXL.  Breit Cleaners will clean all the coats before they are donated. Drop-off locations are: Healy’s Westside; Old School Tavern; Forest Insurance Agency; Breit & Clean Dry Cleaners; Forest Park National Bank; Forest Park Village Hall; Forest Park Community Center; and McGaffer’s Tavern.

The Forest Park Rotary Club is a group of Forest Park civic and business leaders who are volunteering their time, talent and treasure to help our community.  Everyone is welcome to attend the twice a month meetings, held on the first and third Wednesday of the month from 6pm until 7pm at Healy’s Westside.

Park District to hold Turkey Shootout hoops competition

The Buffalo Grove Park District will hold its annual Spot Shot Turkey Shootout basketball competition at Prairie Elementary School, 1530 Brandywyn Lane, on Nov. 21. The free event provides children and parents with an opportunity to showcase their shooting skills from various spots on the basketball court. Divisions include Grades 1-2 (9-9:30 a.m.), Grades 3-4 (9:30-10 a.m.), Grades 5-6 (10-10:30 a.m.) and Grades 7-8 (10:30-11 a.m.). The winner of each division will receive a frozen turkey. Library continues Entrepreneur’s Café film series

The Mount Prospect Public Library, 10 S. Emerson Street, continues its Entrepreneur’s Café: Spotlight on Success film series with a screening of “Something Ventured: Risk, Reward, and the Original Venture Capitalists,” which details how entrepreneurs worked with venture capitalists to grow world-class companies, including Apple, Cisco and Atari, among others. The village’s Parks & Recreation department will present Know Your Blood Pressure from 10-11 a.m. Nov. 21 at the Community Recreation Center, 4709 W. 179th St. The free event (for ages 18 and up) will include complementary blood pressure screenings, and guest speaker Nancy Dornhecker will discuss the symptoms of high blood pressure, and what can be done to prevent strokes. The villlage’s Human Services Division has coordinated a Community Giving Program, designed to assist Skokie families with limited financial resources in the purchase of holiday food, and items specific to each family’s needs and wants. Police Department opens arms to Toys for Tots program

The Oak Forest Police Department has begun its annual participation in the United States Marine Corps Reserves’ Toys for Tots program. The police department will be accepting donations of new and unwrapped toys in the lobby at City Hall, located at 15440 S. Central Ave., through Dec. 14. In 2014, the police department collected 1,475 new toys, and is looking to collect at least 2,000 this year. In addition, a Fill the Squad Toy Drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 27 at Walgreens, 5525 W. 159th St. Volunteers from the police department and the U.S. Marines will join Santa Claus to meet and greet donors. Arlington Heights

Park District to install new turf at Sunset Meadows

A report stated that the Arlington Heights Park District board approved a project to install synthetic turf at both the east and west playing fields at Sunset Meadows, located at the intersection of Kirchoff and New Wilke roads. Officials said the project, set to begin in 2016, will cost $2.1 million. The synthetic turf will reduce wear and tear associated with the existing grass fields, providing a safer environment, during competition among various football, soccer and lacrosse teams. The project is part of a $15.7 allowance in the park district’s budget for capital projects to be undertaken in the next five years.

South Holland

Village expands hours for seniors’ bus program

The village announced that it has increased the hours of operation for its free Seniors Dial-A-Ride Bus program, a door-to-door service available to anyone age 65 and up, and to residents with disabilities and special needs. Service area boundaries are from Irving Park Road to Lake Street, and from Narragansett Avenue to 25th Avenue. The program is offered from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays, with no service on Sundays. Library sets schedule for fall book sale

The Friends of the Rolling Meadows Library Fall Book Sale will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Nov. 12; from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 13; from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 14; and from 1-4 p.m. Nov. 15 in the library’s 2nd Floor Community Room, located at 3110 Martin Lane. More than 10,000 hardcover and paperback books, donated from the community and the library, will be available for purchase, as well as CDs, DVDs, videotapes, cassettes and records — ranging in price from 50 cents to $3. Village Hall to host program on mental illness

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will present Mental Health Crisis: CIT Trained Police Save Lives and Improve Outcomes, from 6:30-9 p.m. Nov. 17 at Barrington Village Hall, located at 200 S. The program will feature strategies to de-escalate a mental health crisis at home or in the community, and discussions on how families can best work with CIT trained officers to make communities and loved ones safer. Village offers workshop to study business district improvement

The village will present a Downtown Master Plan Public Workshop from 7-9 p.m. Nov. 16 at North Shore Country Day School (Upper School), 310 Green Bay Road. Hosted by Teska Associates — the village’s Downtown Master Plan consultant — the workshop will provide residents with an opportunity to share ideas about how to improve the Elm Street, Hubbard Woods and Indian Hill business districts.
