Cook County

County offers series of Rabies Vaccine Mobile Clinics

The office of 17th District Cook County Commissioner Sean M. Morrison announced that the Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control will host a series of Rabies Vaccine Mobile Clinics through Oct. 5 at various locations throughout the county. The clinics will offer affordable rabies vaccines for residents’ dogs, cats and ferrets in an effort to being citizens into compliance with the law while providing essential public health protection against deadly diseases. Clinics will be available from 10 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. July 26 at Brookfield Village Hall, 8820 Brookfield Ave.; July 27 at Prairie Lakes Community Center, 515 E. Thacker Street, Des Plaines; and Sept. 20 at Jewel Grocery Store, 127th Street and Harlem Avenue, Palos Heights. Wheeling

Police Dept. taking applications for Citizen’s Police Academy

The Wheeling Police Department is now accepting applications for its next Citizen’s Police Academy, scheduled to run from September through mid-November. Classes will meet one night a week from 7-9:30 p.m. at the police department, 1 Community Boulevard. The academy is designed to increase understanding between citizens and the police through education, and will acquaint participants with law enforcement’s role in the criminal justice system and with the tasks police officers face in their daily work. The initial sessions will include an orientation and presentation on the history and organization of the Wheeling Police Department. Subsequent classes will include information on specific department units, including Patrol, Traffic, Crime Prevention/Community Relations, Forensic Evidence and Investigations. Law enforcement topics to be covered include domestic violence, child abuse, use of force, criminal law, major crimes and community policing. The academy also includes a demonstration by Duke, the department’s police canine. Upon completion of the 10-week curriculum, new academy members will have an opportunity to ride in a patrol car for one shift, and graduates also will have the option of joining the Wheeling Police Department’s Citizen’s Patrol. Bellwood

Bellwood resident earns Civic Leader of the Year award

The village reported that Bellwood resident Dr. Daisy Harmon Allen, president of the Chicago Chapter of the National Black Nurses Association (CCBNA), was named Civic Leader of the Year by the Bellwood Chamber of Commerce and Maywood Chamber of Commerce during the organizations’ first combined Annual Award and Scholarship Banquet, held June 8 at Triton College, in River Grove. Allen, a professional nurse for 38 years who holds a Ph.D. in health care administration, is a certified bereavement/grief counselor, a member of the Beta Mu Chapter of Lambda Pi Alpha Sorority and an OES Past Worthy Matron Saint John Chapter member. She also designed, implemented and evaluated programs for nursing and community education as Vice President of Nursing Services at Evangelical/Advocate Hospitals Systems.

Schaumburg

Village begins Schaumburg Court Improvement Project

The village reported that the Schaumburg Court Improvement Project is underway. The project includes concrete improvements, the resurfacing of Schaumburg Court (including the front entrance to the Robert O. Atcher Municipal Center, 101 Schaumburg Court), relocation of the existing U.S. Postal Service mailbox and the Village Payment mailbox, and any required landscaping work. The improvements require the closure of Schaumburg Court through July 22, and also July 25-29, weather permitting. In order to access the Municipal Center while Schaumburg Court is closed, signage will direct traffic to utilize the entrance to the Prairie Center for the Arts off of Schaumburg Road. Tinley Park

Village extends deadline for purchase of vehicle stickers

The village reported that Tinley Park residents who did not purchase vehicle stickers by the June 30 deadline will have until Aug. 1 to do so without receiving a police citation, though late fees still will apply. The Tinley Park Police Department will begin ticketing violators on Aug. 1. Stickers are available for purchase from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Village Hall, 16250 S. Oak Park Ave. — and 24 hours a day at the Tinley Park Police Department, 7850 W. 18rd Street. Including late fees, the cost is $45 for passenger automobiles, vans and recreational vehicles; $20 for motorcycles; $60 for trucks (one ton or less); $95 for trucks (more than one ton); $70 for buses and taxis; and $3 for senior citizen passenger autos. Car Show to be held in conjunction with Street Dance

The village announced that the annual Franklin Park Car Show — in conjunction with the Park District of Franklin Park’s 2016 Street Dance — will be held from 5-10 p.m. July 22 at 9760 Franklin Ave., between 25th Avenue and Ruby Street. The car show will feature a wide variety of antique, classic, custom, modified and muscle cars in competition for trophies. Street Dance will include a variety of local food vendors, children’s activities and entertainment — including Miss Jamie’s Farm, a puppet and live music show — and live music by local bans Fire the Canon! and The Gingers, and more.
