Man charged in River North murder

A Chicago man has been charged with the murder of a man on State Street.

Gino D. Bassett Sr., 56, a resident of the 6100 block of South Ingleside Avenue, has been charged with first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

Bassett was arrested at 10:20 a.m. April 4 after he was identified as the individual who allegedly  fatally stabbed a man at 2:27 a.m. March 23 in the 400 block of North State Street. The suspect allegedly approached a 55-year-old man in the alley and stabbed the victim in the neck.

The victim was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Bassett fled to the stairwell of the Grand and State stop of the Chicago Transit Authority’s Red Line where he displayed a knife and threatened to stab two women before fleeing, police said.

After learning of his whereabouts April 4, police placed Bassett in custody and charged him.
