Six deaths attributed to cold weather

At least six deaths in Cook County are being at least partially attributed to the cold temperatures.

According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, exposure to the cold was at least a contributing factor in each of the deaths.

The deaths attributed to the cold were:

  • James Jernigan, 81, a resident of the 7600 block of South Phillips Avenue in Chicago, who died Friday, Jan. 12. The Medical Examiner’s Office listed exposure to the cold as a secondary cause of death.
  • Robert Tuxford, 62, a resident of the 10100 block of South Kostner Avenue in Oak Lawn, who also died Friday, Jan. 12. The Medical Examiner’s Office listed exposure to the cold as a secondary cause of death.
  • Vanda Parish, 66, a resident of the 1900 block of West Cuyler Avenue in Chicago, who died Tuesday, Jan. 16. The Medical Examiner’s Office said Parish died of multiple blunt force injuries from a fall down stairs and listed hypothermia and exposure to the cold as secondary causes of death.
  • Thomas Kapala, 62, a resident of the 3900 block of West 109th Street in Chicago, who died Monday, Jan. 15. The Medical Examiner’s Office listed exposure to the cold as a secondary cause of death.
  • John Drygalski, 86, a resident of the 2200 block of North Harlem Avenue in Elmwood Park, who also died Monday, Jan. 15. The Medical Examiner’s Office listed exposure to the cold as a secondary cause of death.
  • Richard Kellinger, 73, of Streamwood, who died Friday, Jan. 12. The Medical Examiner’s Office listed cold exposure with hyperthermia as a cause of death.
