Four presidents honored in new exhibit

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield has a new exhibit that looks at what four U.S. presidents with ties to Illinois had in common and how their time in the state affected their lives.

The exhibit, “From Illinois to the White House: Lincoln, Grant, Reagan, Obama,” is being done as part of Illinois’ bicentennial celebration. Located inside the museum, it runs through the end of the year and includes historic artifacts that show the achievements of the presidents as politicians and communicators. Also included are items from the presidents’ wives.

City to resume landscape pickup

DeKalb residents may toss out landscape waste on regularly scheduled trash pickup days starting April 1.

The DeKalb Public Works Department is reminding residents to place yard waste in approved biodegradable landscape waste bags or garbage cans no larger than 32 gallons. Waste Management will not pick up anything in plastic bags or boxes.

Residents should also cut brush to 4-foot lengths and tie with string or baler’s twine in bundles not to exceed 50 pounds.

Landscape waste drop-off containers also are in place at the DeKalb Fire Station 2 at 1154 S. Seventh St., at city garden plots west of Fire Station 3 at 950 W. Dresser Road and on the southeast corner of North Seventh and Oak streets.

These containers are only for DeKalb residents. Landscape waste should be put in approved waste bags, which are not made of plastic and placed in the containers.

The city of DeKalb will prosecute those who dump any non-landscape items, dump any refuse including landscape waste on the ground or dumping by professional landscape contractors.

Park district to hold job fair

The DeKalb Park District will hold a community job fair from 4-6 p.m. April 5 at the Hopkins Community Center, 1403 Sycamore Road, DeKalb. The park district is offering employment opportunities for teens and adults alike, with flexible work schedules and a range of jobs.

Seasonal positions for 2018 include: 

  • Golf operations – clubhouse and concessions attendants.
  • Parks maintenance – seasonal maintenance and custodians.
  • Aquatic center – assistant pool managers, lifeguards, swim instructors, concessions and cashiers.
  • Program instructors – camp counselors, educational and recreation fitness instructors.
  • Sport programs – baseball and softball umpires, scorekeepers and athletic field supervisors.
  • Customer service – pool admissions and front desk greeters.

Representatives from the park district will be at the job fair to answer questions, assist with completing job applications and to conduct onsite interviews. Job openings are posted at dekalbparkdistrict.com.

Kindergarten enrollment opens

Kindergarten registration for the 2018-19 school year will be held from 4:30-7 p.m. April 12 and April 18 at all elementary schools in District 428.  Parents or guardians who do not know which school their child would attend should call the Education Center at (815) 754-2199 for information. Students must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 to be eligible to enroll.  Registration packets plus various other forms of identification such as birth certificates, proof of residency and parent/guardian photo IDs are necessary.

GENOA/SYCAMORE

Run will benefit school scholarship fund

The Russell Hustle 5K Trail Run and 2K Fun Run will be held April 14.  All proceeds will support the scholarship fund of St. Mary School in Sycamore.

The race will start and finish at Russell Woods, 980 Park Ave., Genoa. Race day registration will open at 8 a.m. The 5K Trail Run will start at 10 a.m. The 2K Fun Run will follow at about 11 a.m.

Race packets may be picked up before race day from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. April 13, at St. Mary’s Catholic School, 222 Waterman St., Sycamore, and also on race day starting at 8 a.m.

GENOA

Church will present play about passion of Christ

St. Catherine of Genoa Catholic Church will host a theatrical performance of “The Mystery of the Passion of Christ.” The production is based on the gospel of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Show time will be 4 p.m. March 30. A free-will donation will be collected. The church is at 340 S. State St., Genoa.

SANDWICH

Community band gives annual concert

Indian Valley Community Band will present its annual Spring Concert at 2 p.m. April 15, at the Sandwich Opera House, 140 E. Railroad St.

This multi-generational group of volunteer musicians started performing 32 years ago, and the tradition continues today. Directed by Richard Hart, the concert will feature a variety of popular music suitable for all ages, including favorite numbers from past concerts. Admission is free.

Concertgoers are welcome to stay for a reception after the performance. For information, call (815) 786-6752.
