A 48-year-old Aurora man has been charged with first-degree murder following the shooting death of an Aurora man on Monday.

Alfredo Soto, 48, 700 block of Iowa Avenue, Aurora, has been charged with the shooting death of Martiniano Alvarez.

Despite many attempts to save him, Alvarez, 31, 100 block of Laurel Drive, died from injuries he sustained after being shot multiple times on Monday evening (Aug. 1) inside of an Aurora social club, Aurora police said.

Aurora Police Department Spokesman Dan Ferrelli said the shooting occurred around 6:40 p.m. inside the Latin American Club, 1300 block of Dearborn Avenue, on the city’s near east side.

According to Ferrelli, Soto was reportedly drinking with two friends inside the club on Monday evening before shots rang out.

Police said shortly after the three men arrived, Alvarez turned up and appeared to be having a normal conversation with the men.

At some point, Soto was seen getting up from the bar and walking toward the front door. Ferrelli said he told the Alvarez to come with him.

“When the victim walked toward the door, the suspect apparently produced a handgun and shot the man several time,” Ferrelli wrote in a Tuesday afternoon news release.

Police said Soto left the bar, got into a white pick-up truck and fled the scene westbound.

Police arrived and found Alvarez inside of one of the club’s entrances suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Ferrelli said. Alvarez was transported to the hospital suffering from life-threatening injuries and eventually passed away.

Based on descriptions provided by club employees, police were able to quickly identify the Soto, his type of vehicle, and where he lives. Police officers who had previous contact with the suspect were able to confirm the information, and officers responded to the man’s home where he was taken into custody.

Ferrelli said a definite motive has not been established.

The Kane County State’s Attorney is assisting Aurora police in the investigation.

This is not the first time blood has been shed inside the Latin American Club.

In the early morning hours of Dec. 6, 2015, three masked men entered the club as 79-year-old Felipe Garcia and a 55-year-old man were readying it for business around 5:30 a.m.

The men demanded money from two men who were cleaning the building. Almost simultaneously, they attacked the men and beat them until they were unconscious, police said.

The robbers, at least one of whom was armed with a large, machete-type knife, made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and liquor, police said.

Both victims were taken to hospitals where Garcia, of Plano, eventually passed away from his injuries.

Garcia had been a member of the club for decades, and spent his retirement working happily at what he considered to be his second home, his daughter said.
