Chicago man killed in Aurora crash

Aurora police are investigating a single vehicle crash that occurred Dec. 2 that claimed the life of a 22-year-old Chicago man.

Around 10:30 p.m. officers responded to the area of West Indian Trail and Deerpath Road where they located the victim, Brian Dorantes, partially ejected from his 2003 Acura RSX. According to witnesses, Dorantes, the sole occupant of his vehicle, was westbound on Indian Trail traveling at a very high rate of speed. When he approached the intersection with Deerpath, he moved to the eastbound lanes of Indian Trail, disregard the stop sign and travel through the intersection. His car briefly became airborne and when it landed, he slid to the right leaving the roadway and collided with two trees on the north side of the street.

Dorantes was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:47 p.m. Toxicology samples are pending at the Kane County Coroner’s Office. There were no preliminary signs of alcohol or drug use.

Oswego

Prank call of shooting puts schools in lockdown

Three Oswego Community School District 308 schools were put on lockdown Dec. 4 after a report of a shooting near the schools was called in to Oswego police.

Police said the call, which was determined to be unfounded, was placed by a 14-year-old boy as a “prank”. The teen has been charged with felony disorderly conduct.

According to police, officers responded to the 500 block of Secretariat Lane around 11:40 a.m. Monday after receiving the call for shots fired in the area. Because of the proximity of the alleged shooting to area schools, Plank Junior High School, Churchill Elementary School and Brokaw Early Learning Center were placed on lock out status while officers investigated the allegations.

Lockout status means all doors remained locked and no one was allowed in or out of the buildings while the investigation into the reported shooting occurred.

As they investigated, police quickly determined that the initial shooting report was unfounded. After the situation was cleared, school functions resumed as normal.

On Dec. 5, following their investigation into the incident, Oswego police arrested a 14-year-old boy who was alleged to have made the shots fired call as a “prank”, police said.

The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office approved a felony charge of disorderly conduct against the teen. He was released to his parents pending a future court date in Juvenile Court.

OHS athletic training program wins award

The Oswego High School Athletic Training Program received a first place Team Safe Sports School Award from the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA).

This is the second time the Oswego Athletic Training Program has received this award.

The Safe Sports School Award recognizes secondary schools around the country that take the crucial steps to keep their athletes free from injuries.

Oswego High School Athletic Training program not only won this award, but achieved first place Safe Sports status by creating a positive athletic health care administrative system, promoting safe and appropriate practice and competition facilities, and ensured that athletes and parents were educated on the potential benefits and risks in sports, as well as their responsibilities.

These award recipients are selected by the NATA, the association reviews all submitted applications and grants an award based on the designated qualifications.

“We are extremely proud of the time and commitment that our staff and students have given to our athletes and our athletic program here at Oswego High School.  The trainers spend a lot of time being unseen, and when things go well they don’t necessarily get recognized for the work that they do.  It is nice to see this recognition for our program,” said Brian Cronin, head athletic trainer at Oswego High School.
