Oswego students win National Conservation Award

Seventh and eighth grade students at Bednarcik Junior High School were part of the National Energy Education Development (NEED) program Energizing Student Potential (ESP) project, and were invited to attend an ESP celebration program at the Field Museum on May 17. Bednarcik was one of six schools invited to present a project.

The Environmentalists are a group of seventh grade students dedicated to improving our world through recycling and energy conservation. They started many programs at our school this year and in June will be recognized by The NEED Project Youth Awards Program for Energy Achievement as the National Rookie Team of the Year. As part of the recognition weekend in Washington, D.C., they will be able to attend workshops to learn new strategies and develop leadership skills to help the team make an impact on our community energy usage.

Thanks to the sponsors of this program, Nicor, Exelon, ComEd, BP, People’s Gas and North Shore Gas, the district received resources to help students learn about energy and to help fund a community energy fair in April. The team took advantage of all these opportunities and started making changes in our energy use at school. They hope next school year, to continue this work and expand their efforts to other schools and businesses in the community. The team is sponsored by their science teacher Amy Truemper.

Oswego schools introduce inclusion plan

For the first time in history, Community Unit School District 308 will have a plan to address diversity, equity, and inclusion needs and issues.

According to the district, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Plan is the first of its kind to be approved in the district and is considered “a significant accomplishment for our growing and increasingly diverse public school system,” board members said.

“Having a plan like this in place for a school district that is growing and becoming more diverse will attend to the cultural needs of all of our students and staff,” said Board of Education President Matthew Bauman “Speaking on behalf of the entire board, I can say that we support this plan. The plan will continue to be measured and monitored moving forward.”

The document presented to the Board of Education consisted of data, best practices, goals, and the recommendations of the committee.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Matthew Wendt embraced the plan and noted the district’s growing diversity as a “powerful” force.

“For the past several years, School District 308 has been expanding in diversity, both ethnically and culturally, and we are embracing that change,” Dr. Wendt said. “Our district families represent diverse backgrounds and varied cultures, and we believe diversity builds great schools and communities.”

The district has an estimated population of 75,151 made up of approximately 20,000 family households. Student enrollment has nearly doubled over the last 10 years and District 308 has become one of the most diverse in Illinois. District 308 is currently comprised of approximately 40 percent students of color and more than 80 languages spoken.

Sandwich Yearbook Collection

The Sandwich Public Library is proud of its collection of High School Yearbooks that commemorate the history of the community’s youth. However, the library collection is missing a few years that librarians hope residents can find to help make the collection complete.

The years we are missing include: 1916-1920, 1922-1924, 1932-1934, 1936-1937, 1940, 1980, 1981, 1998 and 2006.

If you happen to own one, or multiple copies of any of the missing years, and are willing to part with it, the library asks if you would consider generously donating it to the library so they can make our collection whole. If you have any questions, please contact the library at (815) 786-8308.
