Dist. 308 awards new contracts
New contracts for the superintendent and two assistant superintendents in School District 308 have been approved with pay raises. On April 27, the School Board voted 6 to 1 to award the contracts for Superintendent Matthew Wendt and Assistant Superintendents Judy Minor and John Sparlin, according to reports. With the pay increases, Wendt’s salary will be at $250,000 and salaries for Minor and Sparlin will be at $160,000, according to reports. The board came under some public criticism for approving the new contracts before the newly-elected members are sworn in and take their seats in May.

City hiring 911 dispatcher
The City of Aurora is accepting applications for the position telecommunications operator in the Aurora Police Department. Applicants must meet several requirements and be able to work rotating shifts during training, and second or third shifts, including weekends and holidays, according to the city. Village looking for best landscape displays
The Montgomery Beautification Committee will be recognizing the best landscapes that feature top summer floral displays at both residences and businesses. Residents can nominate their own property or another address. Nominations will be accepted up through June 15, and judging will take place the evening of June 17. Committee members and volunteer judges will visit all nominated addresses and a sign will be placed in front of the properties selected. Community garage sale approaching
The annual community garage sale will be held Thursday through Saturday, May 14-16, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fee is $10 per address to participate and households can participate in any one or all three days. Registration forms are available at the Village Hall, 200 N. River Street in Montgomery and on the village’s web site, https://ci.montgomery.il.us/. Rain dates are scheduled for May 21, 22 and 23.

Emergency plans for special needs
The Kendall County Emergency Management Agency wants to remind people who know friends, family and neighbors who have any impairment of sight, hearing or mobility or have difficulty in responding to emergency situations. Any household or individual who may need special assistance or medical consideration should contact and notify their local authorities. Programs teach gardening for all seasons
The University of Illinois Extension Kendall and Kane counties is taking registration for its two classes in May as part of its Four Seasons Gardening Program. Horticulture Educator Kari Houle will present Busting Garden Myths on Tuesday, May 12 at 1:30 p.m. in St. Charles,535 South Randall Road, or on Thursday, May 14 at 6:30 p.m. in Yorkville, 7775B Illinois Route 47. Straw Bale Gardening with Horticulture Educator Kelly Allsup will present information on Straw Bale Gardening on Tuesday, May 26 at 1:30 p.m. in Yorkville or Thursday, May 28 at 6:30 p.m. in St. Charles. Still time to register for 5K fundraiser
Operation Welcome You Home will be holding its annual Wounded 5K Warrior fundraiser at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, in Settler’s Park. The event raises money for wounded veterans in need and helps get much needed specialized equipment, including wheelchairs, for veterans. Registration will be open until the day of the event. IDOT to hold community meetings
The Illinois Department of Transportation will be holding a series of community meetings across the state over the next month to discuss the state’s infrastructure needs, including roads, bridges and transit systems. The program is being coordinated with the state’s Capital Development Board. The initial meetings will be announced and updated regularly on the web site, www.idot.illinois.gov. Residents, businesses, and local leaders are invited to participant in the process.

Student MAP award safe for this year
Illinois college and university students who have already received grants from the Monetary Assistance Program for this school year will not be affected by the state’s budget cuts, according to the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, which oversees the program. The proposed cuts will also not impact students applying for MAP grants for the 2015-16 school year, according to the commission. More than $8 million has been cut from this year’s funding as part a budget agreement to close a deficit for this fiscal year, according to reports, Thousands of students across the state who otherwise would have received a MAP grant for this year will not be getting those because of the current 2 percent cuts, according to reports.
