Homeowners Flood-proofing Expo & Workshop on tap
The Lake County Stormwater Management Commission will host the 2017 Homeowners Flood-proofing Expo & Workshop from 3-8 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Libertyville Sports Complex, 1950 N. Highway 45, Libertyville. Attendees can learn about various products, services and solutions to minimize flood damage to homes and properties. The expo portion of the event will provide an opportunity to explore exhibitor tables featuring companies, vendors and other resources. The workshop will feature presentations by industry experts every hour, with information about how drainage systems work, flood insurance and best practices for flood damage protection. Annual Scarecrow Festival coming to Memorial Park
Barrington’s annual Scarecrow Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 21 at Memorial Park, 311 S. Hough St. The family-friendly event includes scarecrow, pumpkin and cookie decorating, pony rides, kids games and entertainment by Bob the DJ. A variety of food options will be available to purchase. Pumpkins, cookies and material for scarecrows will be provided. Attendees may bring clothing and accessories to personalize their creations. Admission is free. Annual leaf collection program set to begin
The village announced that its annual leaf collection program will begin the first week of Oct. 23 and continue through Nov. 17. Residents may rake leaves to the curb or carriage walk line the night before the scheduled pick-up. Leaves should be raked neatly, as close to the curb as possible, in piles no greater than 5 feet in width. Leaves cannot be placed in the street, on carriage walks or sidewalks, and cannot be put out more than one day prior to the scheduled pick-up day. Public Works crews will make one pass by each house in the village during each week of the program. Crews will use vacuum hose machines to collect the foliage. Mundelein
Longtime resident Arneson earns international honor
The village announced that Catherine Arneson, a Mundelein resident for the past 18 years, recently earned the title of Mrs. Royalty International Woman 2017. Mrs. Royal International is an international pageant for girls (ages 4 and up) and women that recognizes, encourages and supports volunteerism. The pageant includes Ms., Mrs. and Woman divisions. Arneson competed against 62 other contestants in the categories of evening gown, personal interview and fashion wear. Since earning her title, Arneson has appeared at Save-A-Pet, in Grayslake, for Clear the Shelter Day, donated books to Alphabet Kids, participated in a benefit for the American Heart Association and a fundraiser for fibromyalgia, and sent donations to hurricane victims. Fall Fun and Haunted Forest 2017 on tap
The village announced that the Special Events Committee and the Fox River Grove Firefighters Association will host Fall Fun and Haunted Forest 2017 from 4-10 p.m. Oct. 28 at Algonquin Road Elementary School, 975 Algonquin Road. Fall Fun includes kids’ games, pumpkin decorating, a hayride and other activities. In addition, Fox River Grove Boy Scout Troop 166 will have popcorn, hot chocolate and bottled water available for purchase. Haunted Forest will begin at 6 p.m. with the Not-So-Scary Walk through the forest (until 7 p.m.), followed by the Scary Walk (until 10 p.m.). Admission to Fall Fun is free. Thirteen BGHS students named NMSC Commended Students
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NSMC) recently announced that 13 Buffalo Grove High School students have been identified as Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. The 13 students — Gabrielle Arland, Deyanna Atanasova, Evan Cochrane, Olivia Cortopassi, Ryan Fulmer, Brian Furman, Saru Garg, Emma Hartnett, Tyler Lubbat, Scott Mahon, Eduardo Morelli, Matthew Rivard and Julianne Roser — placed in the top 5 percent among more than 1.6 million students who took the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The 13 BGHS students are among 34,000 Commended Students in the nation. The NSMC stated that the 13 students, “show outstanding potential for academic success in educational opportunities beyond high school” and are considered, “a valuable national resource.” The students will be recognized at a National Merit Recognition Breakfast at Buffalo Grove High School in late October. Boo Bash offers host of Halloween activities
The village announced that Boo Bash will be held from 5-9 p.m. Oct. 27 at North Park, 1025 Riverwoods Road. The event includes the Haunted Trail & Haunted House, pumpkin decorating, games for all ages, a DJ, face painting, a bounce house, Halloween-themed movies, food trucks, traditional favorites of s’mores and popcorn, and more.
