Ela Township

Township offers babysitting courses for teens

Ela Township is offering a series of Safe Sitter Essentials courses for teens (grades 6-8). The sessions, providing instructions on the most important aspects of caring for children, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 18, Dec. 16, and Jan. 27, Feb. 24 and March 17, 2018 at the Ela Community Center, 380 Surryse Road, Lake Zurich. Topics include basic first aid, personal safety, injury prevention, behavioral management and more. In addition to learning about child care, participants will discuss ethics and the business side of babysitting. The cost is $30, and includes a manual and completion card given out at the end of class. Participants should bring a baby-sized doll (if possible) and must bring a sack lunch. New traffic signal planned for Wilson and Nippersink 

The village reported that the Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) is planning to install a new traffic signal at the intersection of Wilson Road and Nippersink Road. Motorists can expect to see pre-stage work such as tree removal, erosion control measures, retaining wall preparation and utility relocation continue through 2017. The majority of the work to widen the roadway for new turn lanes and traffic signals is scheduled to begin in 2018. The project is expected to take a full construction season to complete. Buffalo Grove

Village to host open house on Lake Cook Corridor

The village will host a public open house concerning the draft vision of the Lake Cook Corridor Market Study and Plan from 6-8 p.m. Nov. 16 at Buffalo Grove Village Hall, 50 Raupp Blvd. All residents, business owners, community leaders and other stakeholders are invited to view and comment on the presented draft vision. Project team members will be on hand to address comments and questions, and collect additional feedback from the community. The Lake Cook Corridor is considered a key asset for the Buffalo Grove community, incorporating more than 470 acres of land and including roughly 1 million square feet of commercial office space, residential dwelling, the Village Campus and municipal golf course. The Lake Cook Corridor also connects Buffalo Grove to a regional network of expressways, highways and other major roads. The project team anticipates the plan to be completed by early 2018. Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting Ceremony on tap 

The annual Winter Wonderland Lighted Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. Nov. 25. The parade will kick off at 5 p.m. at Grant High School, 285 E. Grand Ave., and travel along Grand Avenue to Millennium Park, located at Grand Avenue and Rollins Road. The Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held immediately following the parade. The event includes caroling and hot cocoa. In addition, the Fox Lake Santa House, offering photo opportunities with Santa Claus, will be open from 6-7:30 p.m. The Santa House also will be open Nov. 26, Dec. 1, Dec. 3, Dec. 8-10, Dec. 15-17 and Dec. 22-24. LaPorte named Superintendent of Recreation

The Mundelein Park District recently announced the appointment of Matt LaPorte to the position of Superintendent of Recreation. LaPorte, who has more than 16 years of experience in public recreation, previously served as Recreation Superintendent and Recreation Center Manager with the McHenry Parks & Recreation Department. Prior to that, he served as Facility Supervisor with the Vernon Hills Park District. LaPorte holds a bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management and Policy with a focus in Therapeutic Recreation from the University of New Hampshire (cum laude). He also is a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) and a graduate of the Illinois Parks and Recreation Association’s Leadership Academy. In addition, LaPorte serves as the Membership Council Representative for the Facility Management Section of the Illinois Parks and Recreation Association Board, and is on the Board of Directors for GiGi’s Playhouse (Down syndrome achievement centers). Police Dept. seeks donations of winter apparel

The village reported that the Lincolnshire Police Department is seeking winter apparel donations for Midwest Veterans Closet, a not-for-profit charity organization that provides assistance to military personnel (both current and retired) through generous contributions from the public. Items sought for collection include new or gently used coats, boots, gloves, hats and other warm winter gear. Items can be brought to Lincolnshire Village Hall, 1 Olde Half Day Road. Highland Park

City to extend public parking hours downtown

The city announced that it will temporarily extend parking hours in public parking lots in downtown Highland Park — part of an effort to encourage local holiday shopping and dining — beginning Nov. 18 and running through Dec. 23. Extended parking hours only pertain to public parking lots. On-street customer-only parking, disabled parking, fire hydrant zones and loading zones will still be enforced. In addition, permit parking still will remain in effect, and employee parking restrictions will be strictly enforced as well.
