Home & Business Expo coming to Grand Dominion’s Lakeside Lodge
The GLMV (Green Oaks, Libertyville, Mundelein, Vernon Hills) Chamber of Commerce announced that the Grand Dominion by Del Webb Community Association’s 9th Annual Home & Business Expo will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 9 at Grand Dominion’s Lakeside Lodge, 3555 Grand Dominion Circle. State’s Attorney’s Office to host program on victim’s rights
In recognition of National Victim’s Rights Week, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office is inviting the public to attend an interactive program, “Beat the Blame Game” from 6-8 p.m. April 14 at the College of Lake County, Building C, Lower Level Auditorium, 19351 W. Washington Street, Grayslake. The theme of this year’s National Victim’s Rights Week, “Serving Victims, Building Trust, Restoring Hope” will be examined, and attendees will learn about changing the culture of blaming victims and the necessary tools for bystander intervention. Village to host Bark in the Park event for area dogs
The Village of Hawthorn Woods Bark in the Park event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon April 9 at Community Park, located at the corner of Old McHenry and Quentin roads. The event — sponsored by Oakview Pet Resort — is free, and welcomes dogs to run, jump and play with fellow canines in a fenced-in, off-leash play area. All participating dogs must be leashed and up to date with current influenza vaccines. In addition, the event will include training demonstrations, tips on adoptable dogs, an appearance by McGruff the Crime Dog, raffles, giveaways, dog treats and more. Highland Park
City seeks WWII vets for recognition program
In conjunction with American Legion Post 145’s 2016 Community Recognition of World War II Veterans proclamation, the city is seeking all WWII veterans who currently reside or have resided in Highland Park in order to recognize them at civic events throughout the year. Membership in a local veterans group is not required. In addition to receiving special recognition, participating veterans are encouraged to share their stories with the Highland Park Historical Society, which will record oral histories with the assistance of the Highland Park Public Library staff. Heritage Center offers pair of historical programs
The Grayslake Heritage Center and Museum, 164 Hawley St., will present, “The Postmistress and the Preacher: A Grayslake Scandal” at 7 p.m. April 13. Attendees will learn about the town gossip in 1908, and what happened next. The Grayslake Historical Society’s annual meeting, including the election of directors, will take place as well. In addition, the Lake County Civil War Roundtable will host, “The Great Camel Experiment” at 7 p.m. April 14. Presenter David Noe will discuss the United States Camel Corps, a mid-19th Century experiment designed to train camels for military use that was cut short by the onset of the Civil War. Wauconda
Police Dept. adds new member to Canine Unit
The village reported that Varro, a 16-month German Shepherd, has joined the Wauconda Police Department’s Canine Unit. Varro replaces 10-year-old Maxx, a German Shepherd set to retire in May following nine years of service. Varro’s handler is Officer Keith Ringham, a 13-year veteran of the police department. During Varro’s first day on the job, the newest member of the Canine Unit assisted with two arrests and the confiscation of six grams of heroin. In welcoming Varro, Wauconda resident Marie Demko helped to raise $2,500 in donations to purchase a canine ballistic vest. Food for Varro will be donated by Page’s Healthy Paws, in Wauconda, and the Wauconda Animal Hospital has offered veterinary care.

Village seeks volunteers for roadside clean-up event
The village is offering an opportunity for area residents to participate in the 2016 Roadside Litter Clean-Up event, beginning at 7:30 a.m. April 17 at the Jewel parking lot, located at Route 12 and Route 134. Adults, and children (ages 10 and up) accompanied by an adult, can help with roadside litter removal on Route 12, from Hartigan Road (near Home Depot) to Moretti’s Restaurant, 164 S. Route 12, and at various village parks. Younger groups of children and volunteers will be assigned to a park location. Village appoints Kendzior as new Public Works Director
Mayor Terry L. Weppler and the Village Board recently appointed Paul Kendzior as the village’s new Public Works Director. Kendzior replaces John Heinz, who retired in November. A licensed professional engineer and a Certified Floodplain Manager, Kendzior previously served as Village Engineer for the Village of Northbrook. Vernon Hills
Village to hold electronics recycling, paper shredding event
The village announced that Recycle-O-Rama, an electronics recycling and paper shredding event, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 16 at the Vernon Hills Metra Train Station, 75 E. Route 45. Items to be collected include CRT monitors, laptops, CD and DVD players, cell phones, televisions, printers, computer towers and small appliances. There will be no chemical waste recycling at this event, and there will be a limit of two boxes of paper for shredding per vehicle.
