Lake County

County opposes environmental impact of Foxconn deal

The Lake County Board recently voted unanimously to oppose federal and State of Wisconsin decisions to reduce air pollution standards in five southeastern Wisconsin counties where Taiwan-based Foxconn plans to manufacture flat screen displays, citing regulatory treatment and diversion of Lake Michigan water, as well as impacts to air quality, increased flooding and other ecological impacts from this development. Foxconn, a major supplier to Apple Inc. for its iPhones, is planning to construct a large manufacturing facility in Racine County. The State of Wisconsin passed legislation waiving environmental regulations for Foxconn and approved various incentives. The resolution passed by the Lake County Board includes any upstream development located in southeast Wisconsin that flows into Lake Michigan Watersheds. Additionally, the Lake County Board and Stormwater Management Commission cite the potential for legal action concerning any irreparable harm the Wisconsin decision may have on Lake County residents. Subsequently, the Stormwater Commission adopted a resolution calling for proper environmental mitigation for the Foxconn development. In addition, various environmental and voter organizations have also challenged the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ approval for Foxconn to use Lake Michigan water for its Mount Pleasant manufacturing plant. Opioid Initiative adds entry points for A Way Out program

The Lake County Opioid Initiative has added the Waukegan and Lake Zurich police departments as entry points for LCOI’s A Way Out program. With the additions, there are now a total of 13 AWO entry points across the county. The AWO program was developed by LCOI to create additional treatment access points, reduce crime, reduce substance-related harm and re-frame the role law enforcement plays in community safety. Through the program, people seeking help for their substance use can go to one of the entry points and request help. Police personnel will then work with the Lake County Health Department to find appropriate treatment for the individual. Since its inception on June 1, 2016, the AWO program has helped 395 individuals access treatment, including 96 in the first five months of 2018. The Lake County Opioid Initiative is committed to developing, implementing, evaluating and sustaining a multi-strategy, community-wide effort to prevent opioid abuse, addiction, overdose and death.
