WHEATON

Fourth of July parade to raise food donations

Shopping carts in an Independence Day Parade? Yes. The St. Matthew United Church of Christ Shopping Cart Brigade will make its 37th annual appearance in Wheaton’s Fourth of July parade. Marchers will wheel shopping carts as a visible sign to support the People’s Resource Center and the Interfaith Food Pantry.

Need for food is critical in the summer when donations typically drop. Needed items include canned fruit, high nutrition cereal, diapers (sizes 4, 5 and 6), baby formula, personal care items (such as toothpaste, deodorant and shampoo) and laundry detergent. Cash donations are also requested. The public is invited to bring donations to the parade, which will be held 10 a.m.-12 p.m. July 4, and will travel on Main Street between Front Street and Parkway Drive.

The theme for the 2017 parade is “There’s No Place Like Home.”

For more information about donations, call (630) 665-1236.

History museum director to retire

The city of Elmhurst has announced that the director of the Elmhurst History Museum will retire in October, after nearly 30 years with the city.

Brian Bergheger, has been with the museum since 1988. One of the accomplishments in Bergheger’s career includes his role in the city’s acquisition of Churchville Schoolhouse and its subsequent restoration and rehabilitation. Churchville Schoolhouse is a protected National Register property and one of the few one-room schoolhouses in the state still to be located on its original site. The museum now operates the schoolhouse as a living history classroom for schools in the area and also presents public programs there.

In his retirement, Bergheger plans to get more involved in the social activism side of public history.

Already 30 Naperville neighborhoods will participate Aug. 1 in the 21st annual National Night Out. Commonly called America’s Night Out Against Crime, the annual event is designed to bolster drug prevention and crime awareness and generate support for local anti-crime efforts. Last year, 35 neighborhoods participated, by planning block parties, potlucks, parades and more.

Naperville police are encouraging neighborhoods to sign up by July 15 to make sure police, fire, city vehicles and employees can make an appearance at each neighborhood event.

National Night Out will last from 6-9 p.m. Registration is free. Go to naperville.il.us.

The event’s webpage encourages residents to join people across the nation to turn on their porch lights, lock their doors and spend the evening outside with their neighbors, police officers, firefighters and other city personnel with events such as cookouts, block parties and neighborhood walks.
