Hinckley’s Kaitlin Phillips, a senior on the Loras College women’s basketball team, was named this week to the 2016 Allstate Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Good Works team.

Phillips was among 20 student-athletes named to the national team which honors college basketball athletes that have dedicated themselves to bettering the lives of others through giving back to their communities.

She was among 257 nominees from NCAA Divisions I, II, III and the NAIA nominated, a record-high number of nominations in the award’s four-year history. The honor recognizes student-athletes for their contributions to the community off the court.

Nominees are highlighted for their volunteer efforts, civic involvement, and leadership. These athletes are dedicated to making a difference in their communities.

Off the court, Phillips is a sociology major and is very involved in the Loras community. She is a member of the Loras College Honors Program and President of Delta Epsilon Sigma, the college’s academic honor society. In addition, Phillips is the Communications Director of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee.

Phillips continues her involvement outside the Loras community dedicating her summers to doing volunteer work. One summer she worked with the Interfaith Worker Justice and the New York State Labor-Religion Coalition in Albany, New York She also spent a summer in Kitengela, Kenya teaching Math and English at the St. Louis Academy.

On the court, she was named All-Iowa Conference in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. Last year the Hinckley native ranked second in the IIAC and first on the team in assists with 3.93 per game.

A powerful director of the team’s offense, Phillips also led the Duhawks in scoring with 12.4 points per game. She continues to lead the Duhawks this season, averaging 12.5 points and 4.0 assists per game.

Good Works Teams are each comprised of 10 student-athletes; five from NCAA® Division I and five from NCAA Divisions II, III and the NAIA. This year, sports information directors and coaches at colleges and universities around the country submitted a record number of nominations.

In early December 2015, 154 nominees from the NABC and 103 nominees from the WBCA were announced.
