Collie rescued from Silver Lake

Kevin Rutherford’s 14-year-old collie, Duke, went outside for his morning constitutional, and didn’t return. Instead, he apparently slipped down the icy hill in the back yard, and landed 100 feet out in the lake where he fell through the ice. The Cary Fire Protection District appeared on the scene at 9:52 a.m. Firefighter EMT-B Alex Bleich and firefighter paramedic Beth Taylor suited up in flotation suits, and got to Duke just as he was ready to go under.

Cary-Grove Graduate contributes to Loyola national titles

Jake Selsky, a 2013 Cary-Grove graduate is part of Chicago’s Loyola University’s winning volleyball team. As a freshman, Selsky contributed to the team’s second consecutive men’s national championship. He was second in number of digs per set (2.02) and assists per set (0.420.) On Jan. 10, the team opens the its defense of the 2014 and 2015 titles with a season-opening 3 p.m. match against UC Santa Barbara.

Martin Luther King Jr. Interfaith Prayer Breakfast

Faith Bridge Interfaith Association sponsors its seventh annual Martin Luther King Jr. Interfaith Prayer Breakfast from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Jan. 18.  The event is at D’Andrea Banquet and Conference Center, 4419 U.S. Route 14, in Crystal Lake. The goal is to foster good fellowship among people of different faith traditions. The theme this year is “Staying Awake,” which is inspired by King’s “Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution” sermon.

Willow Creek presents plans for Main Street site

Willow Creek Crystal Lake, 100 S. Main St., could have a 2,000-seat auditorium, an outdoor space with nature trails and a splash pad, gathering spaces and classrooms, according to conceptual designs. Marcus Bieschke, the lead pastor, said that they desire a beautiful, functional community center that will impact the entire region.

Huntley senior breaks basketball record.

Ali Andrews, a senior at Huntley High School, reached 2,147 career points Jan. 5, breaking the record of 2,146 held since 2011 by Johnsburg graduate Melissa Dixon. The game against Bartlett ended a three-game losing steak for Huntley, as they enter the second half of the season.

Visitors to get a friendlier experience

The McHenry City Council hired Waukegan-based Stuckey Construction Company to replace a conference room with a new service counter. Currently, those wishing to find the main counter where they can pay their water bills, buy city stickers, or sign up for classes, must walk to the back of the building. In January, the estimated $100,000 project will begin to change all that. The new counter will be visible from the doorway.

Refuge for Women group home planned

A group home for four to eighth sex trafficking victims is planned for McHenry County. The Kentucky-based group, Refuge for Women is not ready to disclose the location at this time. A series of informational meetings are planned at Loyola Retreat and Ecology Campus, 2710 Country Club Road, Woodstock on Jan. 19. McHenry County Continuum of Care to End Homelessness creates strategic plan

The Continuum’s strategic plan is “To make McHenry County a place where homelessness is rare, homelessness is brief, and homelessness is nonrecurring.” The plan addresses three areas: assuring enough affordable housing; addressing factors that help create homelessness; and creating more structure and policy in place for the Continuum. Currently, the Continuum is all volunteer based and is made up of service providers and residents in the area.
